Seven members of the Munsamy family have been found murdered in the Melmoth area near Eshowe in KwaZulu-Natal following a kidnapping incident, with three suspects arrested.
Family reported missing after house break-in
According to police information, the incident began at the family’s home in Newtown, Newark.
A domestic worker arrived at the residence and discovered that the house had been broken into. The seven family members and a vehicle were missing.
Police were alerted, and multiple units were activated to investigate the matter.
Suspects arrested during investigation
Police confirmed that three suspects were arrested following investigations:
- Two suspects were arrested in the Hlomendlini area
- A third suspect was arrested in Sundumbili
One of the suspects was found in possession of a firearm, while others were found with cellphones belonging to the victims.
Victims taken to Melmoth
Police investigations revealed that the victims were allegedly taken from their home and transported to the Melmoth area.
The suspects later led police to the location where the bodies were discovered.
Victims killed in attack
Authorities confirmed that all seven victims, aged between 20 and 83, were killed.
Police indicated that:
- Three victims were shot
- Four victims were stabbed
Additional crimes under investigation
Police stated that during the incident:
- The victims were allegedly tied up at their home
- Banking details and PINs were demanded
- Transactions were made from the victims’ bank accounts
It is also alleged that one of the victims was sexually assaulted.
Suspects to appear in court
The suspects, aged 21, 26 and 28, are expected to appear in court in KwaDukuza.
Police response
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
Authorities have indicated that further evidence is being analysed and additional links to other cases may be explored.
