A traffic officer was seriously injured in Knysna after being struck by a motorist during a routine traffic stop that turned violent.
Incident occurred during attempted traffic stop
According to available information, the incident took place on the N2 in Knysna after traffic officials identified a vehicle that had allegedly ignored a red traffic signal.
Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver failed to stop, leading to a pursuit.
Officer struck at Knysna Mall
The pursuit ended near the Knysna Mall, where the vehicle became trapped.
It is understood that the traffic officer exited his patrol vehicle and approached the driver with the intention of issuing a fine.
At that point, the driver allegedly accelerated and struck the officer, leaving him seriously injured.
Suspects fled but later arrested
Following the incident, the driver and a passenger fled the scene.
They were later located and arrested within a short period.
Authorities have not released further details regarding their identities.
Officer sustained multiple injuries
The injured officer was transported to hospital for medical treatment.
