M19 crash in Reservoir Hills: man initially declared dead found alive and transported in critical condition

A crash on the M19 between Dunkeld and Reservoir Hills in Durban on Thursday morning took a dramatic turn after a man initially reported dead was later found to be alive at the scene.


Initial reports of fatality contradicted on scene

Early reports indicated that the collision had resulted in a fatality.

However, paramedics from KZN VIP Medics, who were travelling through the area, stopped to render assistance and reassessed the scene.

During their assessment, they discovered that a male occupant, who had reportedly been declared deceased by a previous ambulance service, was still breathing.


Patient found trapped and partially ejected

The patient was found trapped inside the vehicle and partially ejected through the front windscreen.

Medics immediately initiated treatment while calling for additional emergency resources.


Emergency teams assist with extrication

Advanced Life Support intervention was provided by KZN VIP Medics in conjunction with Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS).

Firefighters and Metro Police also assisted at the scene, working together to extricate the patient from the wreckage.


Patient stabilised and transported in critical condition

The patient was stabilised on scene before being transported to a nearby medical facility in critical condition for further treatment.


Two patients transported to hospital

Authorities confirmed that two patients in total were treated and transported by ambulance following the crash.


Social media reports clarified

Multiple reports circulating on social media had initially described the incident as fatal.

However, emergency responders confirmed that both patients were transported to hospital for further medical assessment.
