Attempted Cash-in-Transit Robbery in Mayfair, Johannesburg Leaves Resident Injured

PrimeTime News Desk 0 Comments

Johannesburg, 30 April 2026 – An attempted cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery occurred on Church Street in Mayfair, Johannesburg, this morning, resulting in a resident being shot and injured. Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers responded swiftly to the scene.

According to initial reports, the incident took place around 06:30 on Thursday, 30 April 2026. Suspects targeted a cash-in-transit vehicle in what turned out to be a failed robbery attempt. Gunshots were fired during the confrontation, and a local resident was struck by a bullet and sustained injuries. No cash was successfully taken, and the suspects fled the scene without completing the robbery.

JMPD officers attended the scene promptly, secured the area, and provided an initial response. The injured resident received medical attention on site or was transported for further treatment. Details regarding the exact condition of the victim have not been publicly released beyond confirmation of gunshot injuries. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities actively pursuing the fleeing suspects.

The City of Johannesburg’s MMC for Public Safety acknowledged the quick reaction by JMPD, emphasising that criminal activities in the area will be met with decisive action. No arrests have been confirmed at this stage.

Mayfair, a suburb located in the western part of Johannesburg, has experienced various crime-related incidents in the past, including robberies and shootings. This latest event underscores the persistent risks associated with violent cash-in-transit attacks and the potential danger to innocent bystanders caught in crossfire.

Police have urged residents and motorists in the vicinity to remain vigilant while the investigation continues. Further updates are expected as more details become available regarding the number of suspects involved, any vehicles used, or evidence recovered from the scene.

This article is compiled from verified statements by JMPD and the City of Johannesburg, along with consistent accounts from local community safety networks reported on the day of the incident. No fatalities were confirmed in connection with this attempted robbery.
