An Uber driver narrowly escaped being shot during a terrifying hijacking in Zola 3, Soweto, after allegedly questioning one of the armed suspects who had taken control of his vehicle.
Dashcam footage of the incident shows the driver confronting one of the suspects, who is wearing a bucket hat and appears to be holding a firearm. The suspect leans towards the driver while pointing what appears to be a gun at him.
According to information shared alongside the footage, the driver was threatened with being shot in the mouth after questioning the hijackers during the incident.
The footage sparked widespread concern, particularly among e-hailing drivers, who face the risk of being targeted by criminals while transporting passengers.
JMPD Arrests 20-Year-Old Suspect
Following the circulation of the footage, members of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit launched an operation after receiving information about the whereabouts of a suspect linked to the hijacking.
On Sunday, 17 May 2026, officers followed up on a tip-off and proceeded to a residential property in Zola 3, Soweto.
Upon entering the premises, officers found two men and a woman. One of the men reportedly matched the physical description of the individual seen in the viral dashcam footage.
The 20-year-old suspect allegedly told officers that he had been preparing to hand himself over at Jabulani Police Station. He was subsequently arrested.
JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca, commended the Tactical Response Unit for its work in tracking down the suspect.
The arrest was confirmed by the JMPD in a statement issued on 18 May 2026.
Concerns Over Attacks on E-Hailing Drivers
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by e-hailing drivers in Johannesburg and other parts of South Africa.
Drivers can be exposed to serious risks when responding to ride requests, particularly when criminals allegedly use e-hailing services to gain access to vehicles before carrying out robberies or hijackings.
The arrest of the 20-year-old suspect was an important development in the investigation. However, further details about the driver’s condition, the firearm allegedly used and subsequent court proceedings were not provided in the available information.
The identities of any other individuals who may have been involved have also not been confirmed.
