An e-hailing driver is recovering in hospital after allegedly being shot and brutally assaulted during an armed robbery in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The incident reportedly occurred at approximately 01:00 after the driver had dropped off a female passenger who allegedly asked him to wait while she went to fetch her bag.
According to the information available, the woman reportedly told the driver that she would return shortly, prompting him to remain at the location.
However, while the driver was waiting, a group of armed suspects allegedly approached him and launched an attack.
The suspects reportedly opened fire on the driver before subjecting him to a violent assault. The circumstances surrounding the shooting and the alleged torture have not yet been established.
The attackers allegedly robbed the driver of his cellphone, cash and car sound system before fleeing the scene.
The driver sustained injuries during the attack and was subsequently taken to hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment.
It remains unclear whether the female passenger who requested that the driver wait was involved in the robbery or whether the suspects had been waiting for him at the location.
The incident raises further concerns about the safety of e-hailing drivers, who regularly collect and transport passengers at different locations, including during late-night and early-morning hours.
At the time of writing, further details surrounding the incident, including the identity of the victim, the number of suspects involved and whether a criminal case has been opened, remain unconfirmed.
Police confirmation and further information about the investigation are still required.
