A video posted by Yusuf Abramjee on 2 November 2026 shows an apparent shooting in a courtyard in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.

The footage, timestamped 31 October 2026 at about 19:50, shows a masked person approach a group of people, raise a long object, and produce a bright flash with smoke. A child appears to be among those present. The individual then walks away.

Abramjee’s post gives only the location and the video. Viewers widely described the weapon as an AK-47 or automatic rifle. No official police statement or news reports confirming victims, injuries, or a motive have been released.

The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about extortion and gang-related violence in Khayelitsha, where small businesses, informal traders and spaza shop owners have increasingly faced threats and demands for protection money.

Extortion has become a serious challenge for many small business owners in parts of Cape Town. Criminal groups reportedly approach traders and demand regular payments in exchange for allowing them to continue operating in particular areas. Those who refuse or fail to meet the demands can face intimidation, threats, robbery and, in some cases, violence.

The problem affects a range of businesses, including spaza shops, hair salons, street food vendors, vegetable stalls, clothing traders and other small informal businesses. Many of these businesses operate on limited profit margins, making it difficult to absorb additional costs imposed by criminal groups.

In March 2025, reports documented how informal business owners in Khayelitsha, Philippi and Nyanga were being forced to close their businesses because they could no longer afford the protection fees demanded by extortionists. Some traders reportedly faced monthly demands of between R500 and R1,000, despite earning relatively small profits.

More recently, community representatives have raised further concerns about the situation in Khayelitsha. In October 2026, the Khayelitsha Development Forum reported receiving complaints from business owners on a daily basis, with some businesses allegedly being forced to surrender between 15% and 20% of their earnings to extortionists.

The impact extends beyond the money taken from business owners. Traders who refuse to pay can fear for their lives, while those who comply may find themselves struggling to cover stock, rent, wages and other operating expenses. There have also been reports of businesses shutting down because they cannot afford demands from multiple groups operating in the same area.

Fear of retaliation also makes the problem difficult to address. Some business owners are reluctant to report extortion to the police because they fear that information about their complaints could reach the people threatening them.

Although extortion is a documented problem in Khayelitsha, there is currently no evidence establishing a connection between the shooting shown in the footage and any extortion-related activity.

The circumstances surrounding the apparent shooting remain unclear, including who the intended target may have been, whether anyone was injured and what prompted the incident.

ELDERLY COUPLE BRUTALLY ASSAULTED AND TORTURED DURING BROEDERSTROOM FARM ATTACK

An elderly husband and wife were brutally assaulted and tortured during a farm attack in the Broederstroom area after armed perpetrators allegedly targeted the couple and attempted to force them to hand over their firearms.

The incident was reported at approximately 22:30, prompting an emergency response from security personnel in the area.

According to the information available, the Security Response Unit (SRU) received the emergency call and immediately dispatched members to the property. Response officers reportedly arrived within four minutes of receiving the alert.

Upon arrival, aerial drone operations were deployed to assist with an initial assessment of the property and a search of the surrounding area for possible suspects.

However, no suspects were located during the initial response.

Further investigation at the scene revealed the extent of the violence suffered by the elderly couple. The husband and wife had allegedly been subjected to a brutal assault, with the attackers reportedly torturing them in an attempt to force them to surrender their privately owned firearms.

The victims were left traumatised following the ordeal, and medical assistance was arranged to attend to them.

Members of SRU worked alongside the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Harties Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) during the response and assistance operation.

FIREARMS TARGETED DURING THE ATTACK

The reported attempt to obtain the couple’s firearms raises further security concerns, particularly regarding the possibility of stolen firearms entering criminal circulation.

Firearms taken during violent robberies can potentially be used in subsequent crimes, creating additional risks for neighbouring farms, residents, businesses and security personnel.

The incident also highlights the vulnerability of elderly residents living on isolated properties, where emergency assistance may depend on how quickly an incident is reported and security teams can reach the scene.

RURAL COMMUNITIES URGED TO REMAIN ALERT

The attack has once again drawn attention to security concerns facing farming communities and rural households.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity immediately rather than attempting to investigate possible intruders themselves. Security providers and emergency services should be contacted when unusual movement, noises or suspicious vehicles are noticed.

Households are also encouraged to ensure that alarm systems are operational, panic buttons are accessible and all family members understand how to activate an emergency response.

Residents should avoid opening their doors to unidentified individuals without first verifying their identities. Suspicious vehicles and activities should be reported, with registration details recorded only when it is safe to do so.

Maintaining communication with neighbouring properties, community policing structures and local security providers can also assist with the early identification and reporting of suspicious activity.

In an emergency, residents are advised to remain in a secure location, activate their panic systems and allow trained responders to handle the situation instead of confronting or following suspected criminals.

The elderly couple are receiving assistance following the attack. No further information about their current medical condition has been made available, and no arrests were reported in the initial incident update.
