Shoprite Expansion Surpasses 2026 Target After Opening 268 New Stores

New Shoprite supermarket as part of the retailer's national expansion

Shoprite expansion has exceeded expectations after South Africa’s largest retailer confirmed it has already opened 268 new stores with one month still remaining in its 2026 financial year.

The retailer had originally planned to launch 223 new stores, but surpassed that target well ahead of schedule as it continues strengthening its presence across South Africa’s highly competitive grocery market. The rapid Shoprite expansion also created thousands of new jobs while improving access to supermarkets in communities across all nine provinces.

Shoprite Expansion Outpaces Original Plans

The latest Shoprite expansion forms part of the group’s long-term strategy to grow its nationwide retail network while supporting its expanding online shopping and delivery services.

During the first 11 months of the financial year, the retailer opened:

  • 41 Shoprite supermarkets
  • 30 Checkers supermarkets
  • 48 Usave stores
  • 92 LiquorShop outlets
  • 38 Petshop Science stores
  • 13 UNIQ by Checkers clothing stores

Several of these newer store formats exceeded their original rollout targets, highlighting growing demand for specialised retail offerings.

Thousands of New Jobs Created

The accelerated Shoprite expansion has also provided a significant boost to employment.

According to the retailer, thousands of new jobs have been created as additional stores opened throughout the country.

The largest number of new stores were launched in:

  • Gauteng – 82 stores
  • Western Cape – 48 stores
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 31 stores

Together, these three provinces accounted for nearly 60% of all new store openings.

Investment Continues Across South Africa

Supporting the ongoing Shoprite expansion is substantial capital investment.

The company invested approximately R3.9 billion during the first half of its 2026 financial year, with much of the spending directed toward expanding and modernising its South African supermarket network.

These investments include store upgrades, improved logistics and technology designed to enhance the customer shopping experience.

Expansion Supports Online Shopping

The Shoprite expansion is not only increasing the retailer’s physical footprint but also strengthening its omnichannel strategy.

With more stores operating nationwide, services such as Checkers Sixty60 can reach a larger number of households, allowing customers to order groceries online with faster delivery times.

The company says its extensive network places stores within easy reach of most South African households, supporting both in-store and digital shopping.

Competition in the Grocery Sector

The latest Shoprite expansion comes as competition among South Africa’s major supermarket chains continues to intensify.

Retailers are investing heavily in:

  • Store modernisation
  • Online shopping
  • Faster delivery services
  • Lower prices
  • New store concepts

Industry analysts say Shoprite has continued to strengthen its market position through consistent expansion and investment while competitors pursue their own growth strategies.

Why This Matters for Consumers

For shoppers, the continued Shoprite expansion could bring several benefits, including:

  • Better access to supermarkets.
  • Increased competition on grocery prices.
  • Improved online delivery coverage.
  • More employment opportunities.
  • Greater convenience in underserved areas.

As the retailer expands, consumers may also see additional investments in technology, product ranges and customer services.

Looking Ahead

The success of the latest Shoprite expansion demonstrates the retailer’s confidence in the South African market despite ongoing economic pressures.

With new stores continuing to open and investment in logistics and digital retail accelerating, Shoprite is positioning itself for further long-term growth.

The company’s final financial results, expected later this year, will provide a clearer picture of how the Shoprite expansion has contributed to sales growth, market share and job creation.
