On the morning of Monday, 27 April 2026, three men aged between 30 and 45 were shot and killed inside a McDonald’s restaurant at the corner of Jeppe and Smal Streets in the Johannesburg Central Business District. The victims were having breakfast when two masked gunmen entered the premises and opened fire. All three men were declared dead at the scene.
Emergency services responded immediately. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department CCTV Reaction Unit secured the area and initiated search operations while the suspects fled. The South African Police Service opened a triple murder investigation and launched a manhunt for the two masked assailants. Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni stated that no stone would be left unturned in the investigation.
In response to this shooting and other recent violent incidents in the Johannesburg CBD, the City of Johannesburg’s Public Safety Department and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department have confirmed a strong and coordinated response. JMPD K9 Unit officers and the Tactical Response Unit have been deployed for manhunt operations and intensified investigations aimed at tracking down and apprehending the suspects involved.
The Public Safety Department has emphasised a zero-tolerance approach to crime in the area. Officers are actively conducting operations to locate those responsible. Authorities have urged members of the public with any information related to the shooting or connected incidents to come forward without delay. Information can be reported to the SAPS Crime Line at 08600 10111 or to the nearest police station. Officials have made it clear that crime in the CBD will be met with zero tolerance.
The JMPD Tactical Response Unit and K9 Unit form part of the department’s specialised capabilities for serious and violent crime prevention and response in high-risk areas such as the inner city. These units are currently focused on locating the perpetrators of the McDonald’s shooting and any related violent incidents.
Local Ward 59 councillor Sthembiso Hlatshwayo has described violent crime in the Johannesburg CBD as a weekly occurrence and has called for higher-level intervention. Police are investigating the circumstances of the attack, including any potential links to broader patterns of violence affecting business owners in the inner city.
The JMPD continues its ongoing crime prevention and by-law enforcement operations across the CBD, including targeted patrols, drug-related arrests, recovery of stolen vehicles connected to serious crimes, and collaboration with the South African Police Service and private security partners. The current manhunt operations build on this foundation, with K9 and Tactical Response Unit personnel directing resources toward apprehending those responsible for the recent violence.
As investigations continue, JMPD and SAPS personnel remain active in the Johannesburg CBD with a heightened presence aimed at restoring public confidence and deterring further incidents. The authorities continue to appeal for community cooperation in providing timely and accurate information that could assist in the swift arrest of the suspects. Updates on the manhunt and investigation will be released through official channels as more details become available.
