DURBAN — Two suspects were apprehended by members of the public after allegedly fleeing from Makro Springfield on Saturday afternoon.
The incident occurred at the Makro store in Springfield, located at 90 Electron Road in the Umgeni Business Park area of Durban. (Makro)
According to information surrounding the incident, security personnel at the store spotted a vehicle in the Makro parking area and subsequently took steps to prevent it from leaving the premises.
The security personnel reportedly closed the gates of the store in an attempt to stop the vehicle from exiting the property.
The occupants of the vehicle allegedly abandoned it after realising that they could not drive out of the premises. They then fled from the vehicle on foot.
The suspects were subsequently pursued by members of the public.
The chase continued towards the intersection outside the Makro premises, where members of the public reportedly caught up with the two men.
One of the suspects was allegedly assaulted during the confrontation before being taken back to the Makro premises.
The circumstances that led to the security personnel identifying the vehicle and attempting to prevent it from leaving have not been independently established from publicly available information. It has also not been established from reliable sources what offence the suspects are alleged to have committed before they fled.
Similarly, details regarding the vehicle, including its registration number, ownership and whether it had been reported stolen, have not been confirmed and are therefore not included.
There is also no verified information available at this stage establishing the identities or ages of the two suspects.
The incident highlights the role of private security and members of the public in responding to suspected criminal activity in busy commercial areas. However, the alleged assault of one of the suspects is a separate matter and should not be treated as lawful simply because the individuals were being pursued.
The suspects remain suspects unless and until a court determines otherwise.
It is also not yet confirmed from the available information what charges, if any, were ultimately brought against the two men or whether they appeared in court following their apprehension.
Makro Springfield is a major retail outlet in the Springfield area of Durban and operates from the corner of Umgeni and Electron roads. (Makro)
Further details from the South African Police Service, including confirmation of any arrests, charges, recovered property or court appearances, would be required before those details can responsibly be added to the report.
For now, the confirmed account is that two suspects allegedly fled from a vehicle at Makro Springfield after security personnel closed the gates, were pursued by members of the public and were subsequently apprehended near the intersection outside the store. One suspect was allegedly assaulted before being returned to the premises.

One Suspect Killed, Two Arrested After Armed Cash Robbery and Shootout at Crown Mines Shopping Centre
Gauteng police are investigating an armed robbery, murder, attempted murder and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition after a violent incident at a shopping centre in Crown Mines, Johannesburg, on Thursday, 13 August 2026.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:30. According to police, a complainant accompanied by shopping centre security personnel was transporting an undisclosed amount of cash to the main safe when two armed men confronted them. The suspects pointed firearms at the group, ordered them to lie down, and took the cash along with a cellphone belonging to one of the security guards.
The complainant activated a panic button, which alerted additional security staff. Guards stationed at the main entrance then saw a red Volkswagen Polo, reportedly occupied by five suspects, travelling at high speed towards the exit.
When security personnel attempted to stop the vehicle, the occupants opened fire, leading to a shootout. The red Volkswagen Polo collided with another vehicle that was entering the shopping centre and came to a halt. One suspect who remained inside the vehicle sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the exchange of fire.
The remaining suspects fled on foot. One allegedly tried to hijack a Toyota Quantum but was stopped by taxi operators. Another was apprehended by security guards. Police later determined that two of the suspects had sustained gunshot wounds. Both are receiving medical treatment under police guard. Two other suspects managed to escape and remain at large. A security guard also sustained a gunshot wound and is receiving medical treatment.
The getaway vehicle was found displaying false registration plates. It had been hijacked and was previously reported stolen at Jeppe Police Station.
Police recovered the stolen cash at the scene. They also seized three pistols and an AK-47 rifle. The serial numbers on all four firearms had been filed off. The weapons will undergo ballistic testing to establish whether they can be linked to other crimes.
Investigators are treating the matter as cases of armed robbery, murder, attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The probe continues, and a manhunt is underway for the two suspects who fled.
