Villa Liza, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng – A taxi driver was shot and killed in a targeted ambush on the morning of Tuesday, 5 May 2026, at the corner of Lama and Barry Marais Road in Villa Liza.
According to statements from the South African Police Service, the incident occurred when the white minibus taxi stopped to pick up three unidentified males who were hitchhiking. While stationary, a sedan vehicle pulled up alongside and occupants opened fire on the taxi before fleeing the scene.
The driver was declared dead at the scene. Three passengers inside the taxi sustained minor injuries, primarily from shattered glass, and were transported to Tambo Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. The three hitchhikers who had been picked up fled the area immediately following the shooting.
Police have opened a case of murder and attempted murder. As of the latest available information, no arrests have been made, and the motive for the attack has not been established. Investigations are ongoing, with efforts focused on gathering forensic evidence, identifying the sedan involved, and locating potential witnesses.
Villa Liza is a suburb in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, located near Boksburg in Gauteng. The area features residential neighbourhoods and is served by local road networks including Barry Marais Road.
This incident marks another violent event involving public transport operators in the region. Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased driver pending notification of next of kin. No further details on the number of shots fired, the calibre of ammunition, or descriptions of the suspects or getaway vehicle have been made public at this stage.
