The body of a woman was found on the side of a road in Kwa-Thema, near Springs in the City of Ekurhuleni, on the morning of Tuesday, 15 September 2026. South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the discovery.
This is the sixth female body located in the Ekurhuleni metropolitan area over the past two months. The previous five were found in and around the Kempton Park area. Four of those discoveries occurred between July and mid-September. The fifth body was located on Monday, 14 September 2026, in Olifantsfontein near Kempton Park.
Kwa-Thema lies approximately 45 kilometres from Kempton Park. Police have stated that it is not yet known whether the latest discovery is connected to any of the earlier cases. Investigators and forensic experts are examining the scene and available evidence to determine the circumstances of the death and any possible links.
In the earlier cases, several of the women were found partially clothed or half-naked and showed visible bruises. Police have confirmed that most of the victims recovered in the Kempton Park area had been sexually assaulted. One of the deceased has been positively identified by family members as Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, a runner who went missing in the area the previous week. Her body was identified at the Germiston forensic pathology facility on 14 September. At least two of the five earlier bodies have been identified; three remain unidentified.
The Gauteng Department of Health has appealed to families who have reported missing female relatives to contact authorities or the Germiston forensic pathology service to assist with identification through DNA and other means. Bodies from the earlier discoveries were taken to that facility for post-mortem examination and forensic processing.
A suspect was arrested in connection with the first of the Kempton Park cases and remains in custody. Police have deployed additional resources, including detectives, forensic investigators, K9 units, tracing teams, metro police and intelligence personnel, as part of ongoing inquiries. Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili has stated that investigators are actively piecing together evidence to establish whether the deaths are linked.
Police have urged the public not to speculate while the investigation continues. They have called on anyone who noticed unusual or suspicious activity in Kwa-Thema, particularly along roads, or who has relevant closed-circuit television or vehicle dashboard camera footage, to contact the South African Police Service immediately. Information that could assist the inquiry should be reported to the nearest police station or through official police channels.
The circumstances surrounding the discovery of the sixth body, including the woman’s identity and the precise cause of death, have not yet been publicly detailed. The case remains under active investigation.
