North West cattle farmer Donovan Marx, 50, is recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery following a horrific farm attack in which he was shot, stabbed and severely assaulted by armed suspects on his property between Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp.
His family has confirmed that he is currently in a stable condition in the Critical Care Unit at Mediclinic Potchefstroom, although his injuries remain serious.
The attack happened on Wednesday morning, 28 October 2026, at approximately 08:30 on the Syferfontein farm.
According to police information, three armed men wearing balaclavas approached a farmworker who was mowing the lawn at the property.
The suspects allegedly pointed firearms at the worker, demanded information about the whereabouts of the farm owner and tied his hands and feet with cable ties before moving him to the back of the house.
The situation escalated when Marx arrived at the property in his red Isuzu bakkie.
Two of the suspects allegedly approached him and shot him in the upper body. They then dragged him into the house, where they tied his hands and feet before stabbing and further assaulting him.
The attackers searched the property and stole three firearms from a safe before fleeing in Marx’s red Isuzu bakkie.
The farmworker managed to free himself after the suspects left and raised the alarm, allowing emergency assistance to be arranged.
Marx was transported to hospital, where he received emergency medical treatment.
Serious injuries and surgery
Further details about the extent of Marx’s injuries have since emerged.
He suffered a gunshot wound that injured one of his kidneys. During surgery, doctors were able to save the kidney.
He also sustained a stab wound to his thigh, while both his ears were cut off during the assault.
The family has also addressed false claims circulating online that Marx was castrated or that an attempt was made to castrate him, confirming that those claims are untrue.
Family shares update on his condition
In a statement released on Thursday, 29 October, on behalf of his wife, Louise Marx, and the family, they confirmed that Donovan had successfully undergone surgery and remained in a stable condition in the Critical Care Unit.
The family said his pain, which was initially severe, had improved following treatment, but his injuries remain serious and his recovery is now the main priority.
Louise and the family thanked emergency responders, doctors, nurses, SAPS members, local farmers, security personnel and community members who assisted during and after the attack.
They also expressed gratitude to people across South Africa for their prayers, messages and support.
The family said they were overwhelmed by the public’s kindness and asked that Donovan be allowed to rest and recover while they continue trusting for his healing.
Hospital visits have been limited to close family members on the advice of the medical team.
The family has also appealed to the public to respect their privacy, avoid spreading unverified information and ensure that any fundraising campaigns or public initiatives in their name receive their approval beforehand.
Police investigation continues
Ventersdorp police opened cases of house robbery and attempted murder following the attack.
Investigators have since identified suspects believed to be linked to the attack, and information indicates they may have fled to another province.
Police teams are following several leads, but no arrests had been confirmed at the time of the latest update.
Farmers and businesses in the Ventersdorp area have reportedly offered a reward of R40,000 for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible.
Anyone with information is urged to contact SAPS rather than attempting to confront the suspects.
Calls for stronger rural safety measures
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation and renewed concerns about violent crime affecting farming communities.
Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp condemned the attack and called for stronger rural crime prevention measures, including improved intelligence gathering, specialised investigative teams, greater coordination with rural community policing forums and increased police visibility in farming areas.
With many farms located far from immediate emergency assistance, the incident has once again highlighted the challenges faced by people living and working in isolated rural communities.
The police investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue working to track down those responsible, while Donovan Marx’s family says their focus remains on his recovery.

Motorist Robbed at Gunpoint After Driving Over Spikes on N1 North
A motorist was reportedly robbed of personal belongings at gunpoint after driving over spikes placed on the N1 North near Petroport Bridge on the night of Wednesday, 21 October 2026.
The incident was reported at approximately 22:41, according to information released about the incident. The motorist had been travelling along the highway when the vehicle drove over spikes on the road, forcing the driver to stop and investigate the damage.
The motorist was subsequently targeted by criminals who allegedly robbed the victim of personal belongings. Three gunshots were reportedly fired during the incident.
No physical injuries were reported in connection with the robbery.
Bakwena N1N4 Toll Road patrollers responded to the scene to assist the victims. The South African Police Service (SAPS) was notified, and the victims were urged to open a formal case of armed robbery.
No information was provided about the number of suspects involved, their identities, the value of the stolen belongings or whether any arrests had been made.
Motorists Warned About Road Spiking
The incident highlights the danger posed by criminals who allegedly place spikes on highways to damage vehicles and force motorists to stop.
Once a vehicle has been immobilised or a driver has pulled over to inspect a damaged tyre, occupants may be exposed to robbery and other violent crimes, particularly on isolated stretches of road at night.
The N1 corridor between Gauteng and Limpopo has been the subject of previous warnings following reports of similar incidents involving spikes and attacks on motorists.
In a separate incident reported in October 2026, a man was fatally shot during a suspected spiking-related robbery near the Carousel Plaza on the N1. That incident was investigated separately, and police had not confirmed whether the fatal robbery was linked to a spiking trap.
The incidents underline the serious risks motorists may face when stopping on highways after encountering objects or suspected spikes on the road.
Safety Advice for Motorists
Motorists travelling on the N1, particularly at night, are advised to remain alert and exercise caution when encountering objects on the road.
Bakwena’s previously published road safety guidance advises motorists who drive over an object or suspected spikes not to stop immediately at the roadside. Where it is safe to do so, drivers should maintain control of their vehicles, reduce speed and proceed to a safer location, such as a well-lit filling station or another secure stopping point, before inspecting the damage.
Drivers should avoid getting out of their vehicles on isolated sections of the highway when they suspect criminal activity. If they are unable to continue safely, they should contact emergency services or road patrol assistance.
Motorists who encounter suspicious objects on the N1/N4 route or require assistance can contact Bakwena on 0800 225 9362.
Anyone who becomes a victim of a robbery is encouraged to report the incident to SAPS and open a formal case to assist with the investigation.
The circumstances surrounding the reported robbery near Petroport Bridge, including the identities of the perpetrators and whether any arrests have been made, remain unconfirmed in the available information.
