A head-on collision between two vehicles in Tsakane claimed one life and left another driver with critical injuries on Saturday afternoon.

The crash took place along Shakwane Street near the intersection with R23 Heidelberg Road. Emergency responders from the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) and Gauteng Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene around 14:13.

Upon reaching the location, teams discovered a white hatchback extensively damaged and blocking the middle of the roadway. A white single-cab bakkie had come to rest on the pavement nearby. Both vehicles contained only their respective drivers.

The severity of the impact trapped both drivers inside their vehicles. Rescue personnel used specialised hydraulic equipment, commonly referred to as the “Jaws of Life,” to free them from the wreckage.

The driver of the bakkie sustained critical injuries. Paramedics stabilised this individual at the scene and transported him to a nearby medical facility for additional treatment. Despite interventions by emergency teams, the driver of the hatchback succumbed to injuries and was declared dead on site.

Following the rescue and medical operations, authorities handed the scene over to local traffic officials for further investigation. The body of the deceased was removed to a forensic pathology facility. Shakwane Street remained closed temporarily while emergency services completed their work and cleared the area.

This incident involved two light motor vehicles colliding directly, resulting in significant structural damage and immediate life-threatening consequences for the occupants. Details regarding the precise circumstances, such as vehicle speeds, right of way, or any potential contributing factors, remain under investigation by relevant traffic and law enforcement authorities.

No passengers were reported in either vehicle, limiting the impact to the two drivers. The response highlighted coordinated efforts between municipal disaster services and provincial emergency medical teams in managing entrapment and providing on-scene care.

Road safety remains a priority in the Tsakane and broader Ekurhuleni region, with such collisions underscoring the risks at key intersections connecting local streets to major routes like the R23. Officials continue to examine the site and gather evidence to establish the full sequence of events.
