A man accused of raping a woman and allegedly attempting to rob her a day later was apprehended in the Lions River area of KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, 24 October 2026, following a confrontation involving the woman, an off-duty police officer and a private security response officer.
According to information released on Monday, 26 October, the incident began after Mi7 Control Room operators received a call from a client reporting an attempted robbery near the Nelson Mandela Capture Site.
Reaction Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene to assist.
Upon arrival, one of the officers found the client and an off-duty police officer struggling to restrain a man who was resisting arrest. The Reaction Officer intervened to help bring the situation under control.
During the struggle, the suspect allegedly attempted to grab the Reaction Officer’s firearm. The officer used his training to maintain control of his weapon while assisting in restraining the man.
Information obtained at the scene indicated that the suspect had allegedly raped a woman the previous day. He was reportedly accused of approaching the same woman again on Saturday and attempting to rob her when the confrontation occurred.
The woman reportedly intended to open a rape case against the suspect following the alleged assault.
The suspect was apprehended at the scene, and the matter was handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation.
No further details about the suspect’s identity, the woman’s condition, the circumstances of the alleged rape or whether formal charges had been laid were provided in the available incident report.
