The decomposed remains of a 74-year-old woman who was reported missing in August have been recovered from a gorge near the Mariannhill Toll Plaza in Hillcrest, west of Durban.
The recovery operation took place after a passerby spotted the remains in the Giba Gorge and alerted authorities. Search and rescue teams were dispatched to the area to retrieve the body from the difficult-to-access terrain.
The Durban Search and Rescue team was assisted by members of the Durban K9 Search and Rescue unit and Search and Rescue South Africa (SARZA).
According to information released following the operation, rescuers had to navigate extremely dense bush and rocky terrain to reach the remains. The conditions made the recovery particularly challenging, requiring specialised equipment and coordinated efforts from the teams involved.
Once the team reached the remains, a Rescue Stokes Basket was used to transport the body down the mountain to the roadside. The remains were subsequently handed over to members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) at Hillcrest.
The woman was identified at the scene by family members as the 74-year-old who had been reported missing on 21 August 2026.
Her remains were found in the Giba Gorge area near the Mariannhill Toll Plaza, although the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death have not been established in the information released about the recovery.
An inquest docket has been opened at Hillcrest Police Station to investigate the circumstances that led to the woman’s death.
The investigation is expected to establish the relevant facts surrounding the case. No further details regarding the cause of death or the events preceding her disappearance were provided in the available information.
The recovery brought an end to the search for the missing woman, while police continue with the process of determining the circumstances surrounding her death.
