Three suspects were arrested following a coordinated law enforcement operation linked to an armed robbery and kidnapping incident that took place at a butchery business in Johannesburg.
The arrests followed an intelligence-driven operation involving the South African Police Service Gauteng Tactical Response Team (TRT), SAPS DPC Tracking Team, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations and Tracker Connect.
According to preliminary information, the incident occurred in Norwood, where suspects allegedly carried out an armed robbery at a butchery before kidnapping victims and fleeing the scene in a Toyota Etios sedan.
Investigators and tracking teams subsequently identified and traced the suspect vehicle to Soweto. Law enforcement members then implemented an operational interception plan after locating the vehicle.
Police reported that when the Toyota Etios was stopped, three suspects exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Officers from the multidisciplinary operation reportedly secured the surrounding area and apprehended all three suspects a short distance away.
Preliminary investigations confirmed that the Toyota Etios sedan was allegedly the same vehicle used during the commission of the armed robbery and kidnapping incident in Norwood.
Following the arrests, officers proceeded to a residential property in Yeoville linked to one of the suspects. During the search operation, authorities recovered a cellular device belonging to one of the kidnapping victims, an unlicensed firearm with ammunition, false registration plates and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the suspects, nor have they confirmed the exact number of victims involved in the kidnapping incident.
Investigations are continuing to determine whether the arrested suspects may be linked to other serious crimes committed in Gauteng and surrounding areas.
The operation highlights continued cooperation between specialised police units, tracking teams, aviation support and private security partners in efforts aimed at combating violent crime, armed robberies and kidnappings in Gauteng.
