On Sunday, 10 May 2026, eleven suspects aged between 27 and 46 were arrested at a fuel plant in Meyerton during an early morning operation conducted by members of the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS).
The Hawks’ TOMS members acted on intelligence received about a planned robbery at the fuel plant. Following the tip-off, authorities operationalised the information and placed the premises under surveillance.
During the surveillance operation, two tankers were observed entering the premises. Preliminary investigations determined that the fuel plant had been placed under administration.
Initial findings also suggest that security personnel guarding the premises may have been collaborating with the suspects.
The operation involved multiple units, including the Hawks’ TOMS, Hawks’ Non Ferrous Section Headquarters, Vaal Rand Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, Bidvest Protea Coin Tactical Unit, and Protea Coin Airwing.
The scene remained active as investigations continued into the circumstances of the alleged fuel theft. The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
This incident forms part of broader efforts by South African law enforcement to address fuel theft. Investigations remain ongoing. No further details on the exact quantity of fuel involved, the specific identity of the plant, the precise charges, or outcomes of the court appearances were available in initial reports.
