In the early hours of Wednesday morning, an attempted burglary and ATM bombing at Khuya Pharmacy in Ivory Park Extension 15 (Ema 15), on Freedom Drive near Score, was interrupted by members of the South African Police Service.
According to reports, a group of suspects broke into the pharmacy with the aim of accessing the ATM on the premises. Police arrived at the scene while the operation was underway, leading to a confrontation and shootout between the suspects and law enforcement officers.
One suspect was shot and killed during the exchange. A second suspect was arrested and taken to Ivory Park Police Station. The remaining suspects managed to flee the scene and were still being sought by police.
No cash was successfully removed from the ATM, as the police operation prevented the suspects from completing their plan. A case of business robbery has been opened at Ivory Park Police Station.
The incident occurred around 02:00 AM and the loud bang from the explosion along with the sounds of the shootout were heard as far as parts of Thembisa. Following the incident, police cordoned off the area around Khuya Pharmacy. Motorists travelling towards Score via Freedom Drive were redirected to use alternative routes.
Investigations by Ivory Park SAPS are ongoing. Police are continuing efforts to locate the fleeing suspects and to gather further evidence from the scene. No official details have been released regarding the identities of the deceased or arrested suspects, the exact tools or explosives used, or any other items recovered.
This incident took place in a busy commercial section of Ema 15 near taxi routes. No injuries to police officers or members of the public were reported in initial information.
Authorities have appealed to anyone with information about the outstanding suspects to contact Ivory Park Police Station. The investigation remains active.
