A head-on collision on the R23 road in Mpumalanga claimed the lives of four women. The crash involved a sedan and a truck on the stretch of road between Volksrust and Perdekop.
According to Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the four deceased were passengers in the sedan. Four other individuals sustained injuries: the driver of the sedan and three additional passengers from the same vehicle. The truck driver suffered minor injuries. All injured parties were transported to a hospital in Standerton for medical treatment.
The exact cause of the collision remains under investigation by law enforcement. Authorities have indicated that reckless and negligent driving cannot be ruled out at this stage. No further details on contributing factors, such as speed, weather conditions, or mechanical issues, have been released.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. Macie emphasized the need for responsible road use, urging motorists to obey traffic rules, drive with full concentration, avoid risky overtaking, and exercise patience. He highlighted the R23 as a priority route due to its history of serious incidents and noted the broader economic impact of road crashes, including significant costs to the Road Accident Fund.
This section of the R23 has seen previous fatal crashes, including another incident earlier in 2026 that also resulted in multiple deaths. Officials continue to appeal to all road users to prioritize safety on such routes.
Investigations are ongoing, and no further updates on victim identities or additional circumstances were available in official statements at the time of reporting.
