A serious road accident on the R612 towards Ixopo in southern KwaZulu-Natal claimed the lives of five people on the night of 18 July 2026. The Volkswagen Polo collided with a roadside barrier around 21:10, resulting in the deaths of three females and two males. One other occupant was seriously injured in the crash.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport and Human Settlements confirmed the details in an official statement. The Road Traffic Inspectorate classified the incident as a very serious accident due to the high number of fatalities. RTI officials have handed the matter over to the South African Police Service Accident Unit for a full investigation. A case of culpable homicide has been opened, and investigators will reconstruct the scene to determine the cause of the crash.
MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims. His office and a team from the road safety directorate have been assigned to locate the families and provide support during this difficult time.
This latest tragedy comes just days after another horrific accident involving a VW Polo. Approximately one week earlier, six people died and one was injured in a head-on collision between two VW Polos on the R34 Memel Road near Newcastle. In that incident, one of the vehicles caught fire after the impact, with reports indicating that some victims were trapped inside the burning car.
In response to ongoing road safety concerns in the province, Duma referenced the recent reconfiguration of the department’s road safety campaign. The strategy focuses on strengthening four key areas: Enforcement, through high visibility of law enforcement officers; Education, via public awareness campaigns; Engineering, by improving road designs for better motorist safety; and Evaluation, to measure the effectiveness of interventions and lives saved.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased or additional details about the circumstances of the R612 crash, such as vehicle speed, road conditions, or potential contributing factors. The investigation remains active, with SAPS and RTI working together to establish a clear picture of events.
This incident highlights the persistent dangers on key routes in KwaZulu-Natal, where multiple fatal crashes have occurred in a short period. Motorists are reminded to exercise caution, obey speed limits, and adhere to all road rules as efforts continue to reduce the province’s road fatality rate. Support is being extended to the bereaved families as the province mourns the latest victims.
