A 23-year-old woman has been arrested and is facing a murder charge following the fatal stabbing of a 34-year-old man in Ha-Mphego, outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo’s Vhembe District.
According to Vhembe District police spokesperson Constable Pfunzo Ramudzuli, the pair allegedly went to a home together on Wednesday. An argument over money broke out after they had been intimate. During the dispute in the early hours of Thursday, the woman allegedly stabbed the man with a sharp object. He later died from his injuries.
Police arrested the 23-year-old woman at the scene and opened a murder case. Investigations into the incident are continuing. The suspect was expected to appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder.
A video circulating on social media shows the suspect claiming she acted in self-defence. In the footage, she states that she did not know the man before they met and identifies herself as a sex worker.
Preliminary social media reports have described an alleged agreement of R800 for the encounter, followed by a demand for a higher amount after the woman reportedly noticed the man had more money available, along with a claimed threat of a rape accusation. These specific details regarding the exact amounts and any such threat have not been confirmed in official police statements released so far.
