Benoni, South Africa – On June 3, 2026, two uniformed Gauteng Traffic Wardens were arrested in Northmead, Benoni, following allegations of extortion and theft targeting foreign nationals on the East Rand.
The suspects, a male and a female, were apprehended in a silver Renault Kwid after the vehicle was identified through information circulating in the community about its links to theft and extortion activities. NoJack Vehicle Tracking’s automated license plate recognition system played a key role in locating the vehicle in the Northmead area.
According to Anton Koen of NoJack Vehicle Tracking, the pair allegedly targeted foreign nationals by demanding to inspect passports and related documentation. Victims were reportedly threatened with arrest if they could only produce photocopies and were ordered to pay a fine of R4,000. The suspects are said to have operated across Benoni, Boksburg, and Brakpan.
At approximately 14:15, the vehicle was tactically stopped in Bunyan Street by a coordinated team including Benoni SAPS, NoJack units, and members of Trio Risk Management and Consulting. A search of the vehicle uncovered dagga, three suspected stolen passports, and other suspected stolen ID documentation.
Benoni SAPS confirmed that the arrested individuals are legitimate Gauteng Traffic Wardens. The Benoni Community Police Forum (CPF) expressed appreciation for the swift response by police and private security partners.
Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have urged anyone with additional information or who may have been a victim to come forward to the nearest police station. The suspects face multiple potential charges, including corruption, theft, and abuse of power.
