South African Police Service and joint task forces conducted numerous operations resulting in the seizure of cannabis, known locally as dagga, across several provinces from January to early May 2026. These actions targeted illegal dealing, transportation, cultivation beyond private limits, and related activities. No single official national aggregate total for cannabis seized in 2026 has been released as of early May 2026. Statistics are typically reported per operation or province, with comprehensive figures compiled quarterly or annually.

Additional operations at OR Tambo International Airport in March 2026 included the seizure of dagga worth R672,000 shipped from Morocco in cargo.
These seizures occurred within the context of the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act, which permits private cultivation and use. Draft regulations published in February 2026 proposed limits such as up to 750 grams of cannabis for possession or transport per adult per day and up to 5 plants for cultivation. Commercial dealing, unlicensed large-scale operations, smuggling, and exceeding private limits remain subject to enforcement.
Operations, often intelligence-led and involving provincial units, the Hawks, and local partners, continued into May 2026. Individual hauls in early 2026 ranged from individual plants or small quantities to over one tonne in single vehicle intercepts, with street values from tens of thousands to millions of rand. Documented larger seizures alone total several tonnes when the major publicly reported hauls are added together. Full national statistics for 2026 are expected in future crime reports.
