Multidisciplinary Law Enforcement Team Seizes Over R12.6 Million In Suspected Stolen Copper In Johannesburg Operation

Johannesburg, South Africa – A coordinated intelligence-driven operation by a multidisciplinary law enforcement team has resulted in the recovery of suspected stolen copper valued at more than R12.6 million in the City Deep area of Johannesburg.

The operation involved personnel from the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence unit, Interpol, Border Police, and private security partners. It was launched following specific information provided by Zambian authorities regarding the hijacking of three trucks transporting copper.

Investigators determined that the copper shipment, totaling approximately 121 tonnes, had been moved into South Africa using trucks fitted with false Tanzanian registration plates and accompanied by fraudulent customs documents. The consignment crossed the border at the Beitbridge Border Post.

On 18 June 2026, authorities executed the operation in City Deep and seized 26 bundles of copper. Further examination revealed that the original serial numbers on the copper had been deliberately removed in an apparent effort to obscure its origins and prevent traceability.

No arrests have been made in connection with this specific seizure to date. Law enforcement agencies have stated that investigations remain active and ongoing, with efforts focused on identifying and apprehending individuals linked to the suspected transnational copper-smuggling syndicate.

This incident highlights the challenges posed by cross-border criminal networks involved in the illicit movement of valuable metals such as copper.
