In a tragic incident in the Parsonsvlei area of Gqeberha, a 44-year-old male South African Police Service (SAPS) sergeant allegedly shot and killed his 34-year-old wife, also a SAPS sergeant, before turning the firearm on himself. The event occurred at their home shortly after midnight on Saturday, 18 July.
According to preliminary reports from SAPS spokesperson Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, the couple became involved in an altercation at the residence. Responding officers arrived at the scene and discovered both individuals with fatal gunshot wounds. They were declared deceased on site.
The female sergeant was stationed at Mount Road SAPS, while her husband was based at New Brighton SAPS. Both held the rank of sergeant. The firearm believed to have been used in the incident was recovered and confiscated by police as part of the ongoing investigation.
Two minor children were inside the house during the shooting but were not physically harmed. SAPS has activated its Employee Health and Wellness Programme to offer counselling and support to the affected family members, colleagues, and the children.
SAPS has strongly condemned the incident and all forms of domestic violence. The service emphasized the importance of members seeking professional help for emotional or psychological distress to prevent such tragedies. Cases of murder and inquest have been opened, with investigations continuing into the circumstances.
This event highlights ongoing concerns regarding domestic-related incidents within law enforcement communities, where access to service firearms can contribute to fatal outcomes in moments of crisis. No further personal details about the couple or children have been released, pending family notifications and the progression of the investigation.
