Five suspects have been arrested in connection with a violent farm robbery and attempted murder in Syferfontein, near Ventersdorp in the North West, following the arrest of three additional suspects on Sunday, 1 November 2026.
The latest arrests bring the total number of suspects taken into custody to five following the horrific attack on 50-year-old farmer Donovan Marx on Wednesday, 28 October.
According to police, the three additional suspects were arrested in Promosa, near Potchefstroom, during an operation conducted by Ventersdorp detectives with assistance from members of the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit.
The arrests followed intensive investigative and operational efforts to identify and track down those allegedly responsible for the attack.
During the operation, police seized four firearms. Two of the firearms have reportedly been linked to the Ventersdorp incident. Officers also recovered clothing items and jewellery believed to be of evidential value to the investigation.
Details of the brutal farm attack
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, 28 October, at a property in the Syferfontein area outside Ventersdorp.
According to information released during the police investigation, three armed men allegedly approached a farm employee who was mowing the lawn. The suspects, whose faces were reportedly covered with balaclavas, allegedly pointed firearms at the employee and demanded to know the whereabouts of the farm owner.
The employee was allegedly restrained with cable ties and taken to the back of the house.
When Marx arrived at the property in his red, single-cab Isuzu bakkie, two of the suspects allegedly approached him and shot him in the upper body.
The attackers then allegedly dragged him into the house, where they tied him up, stabbed him and subjected him to further physical assault.
The suspects subsequently searched the property and allegedly stole three firearms from a safe before fleeing in the farmer’s vehicle.
The farm employee managed to free himself and call for assistance. Marx was transported to hospital in a serious condition.
The stolen vehicle was later recovered abandoned and was taken for forensic processing as investigators sought to establish whether evidence, including possible DNA, could assist in identifying those involved.
Five suspects now in police custody
The latest arrests follow the apprehension of two suspects on Saturday, 31 October, after police launched an intensive investigation into the attack.
North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams previously confirmed the first arrests and praised the investigating team and community members who assisted police in tracking down the suspects.
With three more suspects arrested on Sunday, police have now taken five people into custody in connection with the case.
The suspects are aged between 26 and 56.
They are expected to appear before the Ventersdorp and Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday, 3 November 2026.
They are facing charges of house robbery, attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Police commissioner welcomes latest breakthrough
Lieutenant General Adams welcomed the additional arrests and commended the Ventersdorp detectives and Provincial Anti-Gang Unit for their continued efforts.
He specifically praised the investigating team under the command of Captain Bonita Dry, highlighting the officers’ persistence in following up on information and leads.
Adams said the latest arrests demonstrated police commitment to ensuring that people responsible for violent crimes against members of the community are brought before the courts.
The recovery of firearms and other items during the latest operation is expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.
Police investigations into the incident continue as the five suspects prepare to make their first court appearances.
