A high-speed collision occurred on Steve Biko Road in Pretoria late on Sunday night, 3 May 2026, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to multiple others. The incident took place in the Gezina area of Pretoria.
Two men, 26-year-old Phillip Bezuidenhout and Willie Momberg, were travelling in a modified 1990s Honda Ballade. The vehicle was moving at high speed when it collided with a white Renault Kwid that entered the roadway from a side street or intersection. The impact occurred as the smaller Renault crossed the path of the faster-moving Honda Ballade.
Phillip Bezuidenhout was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital around 21:00 on Sunday night. Willie Momberg, the other occupant of the Honda Ballade, sustained critical injuries including a brain bleed, a hip dislocation, a fractured pelvis, and additional life-threatening injuries. He remains in intensive care.
The driver of the Renault Kwid also sustained injuries. Emergency services responded to the scene, where debris from the vehicles was scattered across the road. Bystanders assisted at the site.
Video footage of the incident, widely circulated on social media, shows the Honda Ballade travelling at high speed along Steve Biko Road immediately before the collision.
The crash is linked to illegal drag racing and street racing activity on the road. Illegal drag racing has been an ongoing issue in the area for years, particularly in the vicinity of Ben Swart Street and Steve Biko Road. Residents have raised longstanding concerns about noise, excessive speeds, and safety risks on Sunday evenings and late nights.
Multiple previous accidents and fatalities in the northern Pretoria areas, including along Steve Biko Road, have been connected to illegal street racing. Motorists have repeatedly been warned about the dangers of excessive speed and unauthorized racing on public roads.
Police and traffic authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash. Factors under examination include speed, road conditions, vehicle modifications, right of way at the intersection, and any potential involvement in organized or impromptu racing activities.
Tributes have emerged on social media for Phillip Bezuidenhout, with acquaintances describing him as a vibrant young man.
Steve Biko Road is a public roadway used daily by residents, commuters, and businesses in the Gezina and surrounding suburbs. The area includes intersections with regular traffic flow, making high-speed activities especially hazardous. Designated legal racing venues exist for motorsport enthusiasts, while public roads are intended for safe, legal travel.
This incident remains under active investigation. Further details regarding charges, the exact sequence of events, and official findings are expected from the South African Police Service and traffic authorities following forensic analysis, witness statements, and vehicle examinations.
