Vusimuzi “Vusi” Radebe was walking from his grandmother’s home in Kwaguqa to Lynville in eMalahleni (Witbank) on Saturday, 19 September 2026, when he was stopped and questioned about where he lived and where he had come from, according to a statement issued by the Radebe and Mathobela families.
He told those who stopped him that he had lived in Kempton Park and was returning from his grandmother’s house in Kwaguqa. The family says assumptions were then made about him because of recent violence linked to Kempton Park. He was beaten and died at the scene.
The family described him as a quiet person who did not speak much and said he was simply walking home. They said he was someone’s son, grandson and loved one, and that his life should not have ended because of an assumption about where he had lived.
Radebe was the son of Sipho and Perfidia Radebe. His mother grew up in Kwaguqa. His father was from Lynville. The family moved to Kempton Park in the early 1990s and returned to Witbank about a month before his death after retirement. They were living in Lynville at the time he was killed.
The family’s account has circulated widely since a statement dated 21 September 2026. Relatives have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident, saw Radebe travelling from Kwaguqa towards Lynville, or has information about his death to come forward. They listed Nonhlanhla Mathobela on 071 357 0950 and Happy Radebe on 069 323 2712 as contacts.
Independent confirmation of the exact sequence of events has not been published beyond the family’s statement. At the time of reporting it was not confirmed whether police had made arrests or what charges, if any, had been brought.
The family links the attack to fear around a series of killings of women in Ekurhuleni. SAPS confirmed on 17 September 2026 that a ninth woman’s body had been found in Dawn Park. Police have been investigating whether some of the cases are linked. Authorities have not confirmed that one person is responsible for all the deaths. Four of the women had been formally identified in reports at that stage, including Dineo Motapane, Gracious Nkomo, Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo and Itumeleng Kekana. Heightened patrols and crime-prevention operations have been reported in Kempton Park while investigations continue.
Radebe’s family has said the matter for them is not the wider Ekurhuleni investigation. It is the killing of a man who was walking home after visiting his grandmother.

One suspect killed and 10 arrested after police shootout in Cleveland, Johannesburg
A shootout between South African Police Service officers and a group of suspects in Cleveland, Johannesburg, on Monday evening, 21 September 2026, left one suspect dead. Ten others were arrested and nine firearms, along with magazines and live ammunition, were recovered.
The incident occurred at approximately 19:36. Police officers on patrol in the area noticed a Hyundai H100 vehicle fitted with blue lights and a siren. The vehicle’s behaviour raised suspicion. When officers approached and attempted to intercept it, the vehicle repeatedly stopped and then drove off.
Officers called for backup and continued to follow the vehicle. When it eventually came to a stop, three suspects got out and opened fire on the police. A shootout followed. Two of the suspects fled the scene on foot. The third was fatally shot by police.
A subsequent search of the vehicle located ten suspects inside. Nine firearms, magazines and live ammunition were recovered from the scene.
The ten arrested suspects are aged between 30 and 54. Cleveland police have opened cases of murder, attempted murder, attempted business robbery, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear in court in the near future. Police investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
According to police statements, the vehicle had been fitted with equipment typically associated with official emergency or police vehicles, including blue lights and a siren. Officers described the driver’s actions prior to the stop as erratic, with repeated stops followed by departures when interception was attempted. Backup was requested during the pursuit. The confrontation escalated only after the vehicle halted and the three suspects exited and initiated gunfire.
No information has been released regarding injuries to police officers. The two suspects who fled on foot have not been accounted for in available reports. The identity of the deceased suspect and further details about the recovered firearms have not been publicly disclosed beyond the total number recovered and the presence of magazines and live rounds.
The charges registered reflect the fatal outcome of the exchange of fire, the alleged attempt to fire on police, the suspected intended criminal activity involving a business robbery, and the unlicensed status of the recovered weapons and ammunition. Police have confirmed that the matter remains under active investigation.
Eastern Cape taxi boss Celani Twazi shot dead in National Intervention Unit operation linked to Libode police killings
Eastern Cape taxi boss Celani Twazi was shot dead during a shootout with members of the South African Police Service National Intervention Unit in Mpindweni. The NIU was executing a search warrant at a premises in the area when an exchange of gunfire occurred. Police recovered a firearm used during the incident at the scene.
Twazi had been linked to the killings of two police officers in Libode earlier this month. The latest operation formed part of ongoing efforts to track down individuals connected to those murders.
On Friday 18 September 2026, in the early hours of the morning, two SAPS members were fatally shot at Ziphunzana Location in Libode, near Mthatha. The deceased were Warrant Officer Thando Magoxo, aged 51, attached to the Mthatha National Intervention Unit, and Constable Ntlahla Tyhali, aged 30, from the Mthatha Public Order Policing Unit.
The officers had responded to a call for assistance after armed suspects attacked a spaza shop and demanded money from the operator. They were later found with gunshot wounds. Both their service pistols were taken. A cordless grinder, allegedly used to cut the shop’s burglar door, was recovered at the scene.
Police opened cases of two counts of murder, two counts of attack on police, two counts of robbery of police firearms, and one count of attempted business robbery. Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata described the killings as an attack on the State and confirmed that a multi-disciplinary team had been deployed with a 72-hour plan activated to trace and arrest the suspects. Preliminary intelligence was being followed up.
Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane directed that maximum resources be deployed. She stated that the killing of officers responding to a call for assistance constituted an attack on those who place themselves in harm’s way and on the authority of the State. She ordered that no resources be spared in the pursuit of the perpetrators and the recovery of the stolen firearms.
In the days that followed, police reported progress under the 72-hour operation. On Friday 19 September, an intelligence-driven operation by Mthatha Crime Intelligence and Mthatha K9 at Ngolo Location in Sibangweni resulted in the arrest of two suspects — a 29-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man — found in possession of an AK-47 rifle and assorted ammunition. They face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Later that night, at approximately 23:55, NIU members acted on information placing one suspect along the N2 at Sibangweni Location, Libode, towards Tsolo. On arrival, the 35-year-old man allegedly opened fire on police. Officers returned fire and the suspect was fatally wounded. A pistol with three rounds of ammunition was recovered.
Further follow-up operations at Ngolo Village, Libode, led to two other male suspects, also linked to the police murders, being fatally wounded. Two handguns were recovered. In total, one AK-47 rifle and three handguns were recovered in connection with the earlier phases of the investigation. Charges under investigation include attacks on police, attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
On 21 September, Lieutenant General Dimpane publicly commended the Eastern Cape police for the swift activation of the operational plan, intelligence gathering, and coordinated multidisciplinary response that produced the arrests and the fatal wounding of three suspects.
The operation in Mpindweni on 22 September, in which Celani Twazi was killed, continued these efforts. According to reports, the NIU was executing a search warrant when the shootout occurred and a firearm was recovered at the scene. Twazi had been identified as linked to the Libode police killings.
