HLUHLUWE, KwaZulu-Natal – Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers from Jozini were conducting a roadblock operation in Hluhluwe, during which they had already arrested several motorists for drunk driving.

While the operation was underway, officers spotted a man riding a motorcycle. He was hooting continuously, waving at people, and shouting the phrase “Libuyile izwe!”. The rider stopped at the roadblock and engaged directly with the officers. He thanked them for maintaining law and order during recent protests in the area and praised their role in keeping the roads safe.

As they spoke, the officers noticed that the man appeared intoxicated. They jokingly asked what he had been drinking. The rider admitted that he had consumed “a little Smirnoff.”

The conversation concluded with the officers informing him that he would be arrested. They determined he was riding the motorcycle under the influence of alcohol, which placed both himself and other road users at risk.

The incident took place as part of targeted enforcement against impaired driving in the Jozini and Hluhluwe areas of KwaZulu-Natal. Such roadblocks are a common feature of efforts to curb alcohol-related crashes on regional roads. No additional details regarding the rider’s identity, the precise charges laid, or the outcome of any blood alcohol testing have been made public.

This arrest underscores the importance of road safety measures and the risks associated with operating any vehicle, particularly a motorcycle, after consuming alcohol. Even small amounts can significantly impair coordination, reaction times, and decision-making, increasing the likelihood of accidents in areas with variable traffic and road conditions.

Authorities in the province continue to prioritise these operations, especially following periods of public unrest or during times of higher road usage. The rider’s decision to stop and interact with officers ultimately led to his detection and removal from the road, preventing a potential hazard. No reports of resistance during the arrest were noted.
