On Wednesday, 15 July 2026, swift intervention by members of the public, a truck driver, and community responders saved a man from a serious fall on the Adams Road bridge spanning the N2 highway in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal.

Passersby Kayla Gander and her husband Wesley Gander were driving over the bridge after running errands when Kayla spotted a man standing at the railing, holding onto it and appearing in distress. She alerted her husband, who stopped their vehicle and approached the man. The man came toward Wesley and shared a personal account of having been raped.

While they were speaking, the man’s mother arrived at the scene. At that point, the man ran toward the railing and went over the bridge. Wesley Gander immediately ran after him and managed to grab hold of the man, preventing an immediate fall into the busy N2 traffic below.

Kayla Gander’s brother-in-law, Johann Potgieter, who was also driving over the bridge and witnessed the unfolding events, quickly ran down to the N2 highway level. He flagged down a passing truck. The truck driver stopped and carefully positioned the vehicle directly beneath the bridge where the man was dangling.

Members of the Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) responded to the scene and assisted in the rescue efforts. With the truck’s trailer positioned as a cushion below, the rescuers were able to safely lower the man onto the trailer. He was then secured and taken off the truck. His mother arranged for him to be transported to a hospital for medical attention.

CCPO representative Paul O’Neill stated that, according to the man’s mother, her son had been experiencing mental health challenges.

Kayla Gander later reflected on the incident, expressing relief that the coordinated actions averted what could have been a far more severe outcome, including potential collisions on the high-speed N2 highway if the man had fallen directly into traffic. She noted that someone swerving to avoid him could have led to additional accidents.

The incident highlights the critical role of immediate public intervention in such situations. The truck driver’s willingness to stop and position his vehicle provided essential support, enabling the group to bring the man to safety without further harm. No major injuries from the rescue itself were reported in available accounts, and the man received hospital care.

This event occurred amid ongoing awareness efforts around mental health and suicide prevention in South Africa. Local authorities and community groups like the CCPO play a key part in responding to such emergencies on the South Coast. The actions of the Ganders, Potgieter, the unnamed truck driver, and CCPO members demonstrated effective teamwork under pressure on a major transport route.
