Bee swarm sparks two-hour ordeal in Middelburg CBD as four people hospitalised

A peaceful Sunday in Middelburg’s central business district turned into a frightening two-hour ordeal when a swarm of bees became agitated, resulting in four people being admitted to hospital after being stung.

The incident happened in the Middelburg CBD during a period of extreme heat, when the swarm emerged from a concealed location and suddenly became a danger to people in the surrounding area.

What began as an ordinary Sunday quickly turned into an emergency as people were forced to deal with the large number of bees moving through the area.

One man became trapped in the middle of the situation and was reportedly subjected to repeated attacks from the swarm.

As the bees continued to surround him, people nearby attempted to find a way to help him escape.

Workers at a salon in the area resorted to an improvised method in an effort to drive the bees away. They set plastic alight to produce smoke, using it in an attempt to protect the man and assist him while the swarm remained active.

The situation continued for approximately two hours, with people in the area attempting to avoid the bees while help was sought for those who had been stung.

By the time the incident was brought under control, four people had been admitted to hospital following bee stings.

The incident caused significant disruption in the CBD as people were forced to take precautions while the swarm remained active.

The circumstances also demonstrated how quickly a bee swarm can become a serious danger when it is disturbed or becomes defensive in an area where large numbers of people are present.

Extreme heat was a notable factor surrounding the incident, with the swarm reportedly being driven from its concealed location during the hot conditions. However, the precise reason for the bees becoming aggressive has not been established beyond the circumstances reported at the scene.

The use of smoke by the salon workers was an improvised attempt to assist the man who was being attacked. Rather than simply leaving him in the area, those nearby attempted to create conditions that would allow him to get away from the swarm.

The incident eventually ended after roughly two hours, but four people required hospital treatment as a result of the stings.

Bee attacks can be particularly dangerous when multiple bees attack at the same time because victims may receive numerous stings before they are able to reach safety.

People who encounter an agitated swarm are generally advised to move away from the area as quickly as possible and seek shelter inside a building or vehicle. Covering the face and protecting the eyes and airways while moving away can also reduce exposure.

People are also advised not to deliberately disturb a hive or swarm, as further disturbance can cause defensive behaviour from the bees.

The Middelburg incident occurred in a busy part of the town, making the situation particularly difficult because the swarm was operating in an area where members of the public and businesses were present.

For those caught in the middle of the attack, what should have been an ordinary Sunday became a prolonged emergency.

Four people were ultimately taken to hospital after being stung, while the incident also prompted an improvised rescue effort involving workers from a nearby salon who used smoke in an attempt to help a man caught in the swarm.

Boksburg couple’s deaths: Jessica Rabe and Yudistan Pillay case heads back to court

BOKSBURG, GAUTENG — The case involving the deaths of 20-year-old Jessica Rabe and 25-year-old Yudistan Pillay is expected to return to the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court as two men accused in connection with their deaths remain in custody.

Rabe and Pillay were reported missing in July after their families became concerned about their whereabouts. Their disappearance led to an extended search involving relatives, community members, investigators and police.

Their bodies were eventually discovered at a property in Van Dyk Park at the end of August, bringing the missing-person investigation to a tragic conclusion and prompting a murder investigation.

Couple reported missing

Rabe and Pillay were reported missing at Dawn Park Police Station on July 27.

During the search, information emerged indicating that the pair had been moving between areas in and around Boksburg, including Van Dyk Park and Farrar Park. They were also believed to have stayed temporarily at different properties.

Missing-person information was circulated through community networks as relatives and others attempted to establish where the couple had last been seen.

Private investigator Wendy Pascoe also became involved in the search and assisted the families.

Information received during the investigation reportedly included allegations that Rabe had previously been assaulted and that her cellphone had been taken.

The circumstances surrounding those allegations form part of the wider investigation into the events that preceded the couple’s deaths.

Search leads investigators to Van Dyk Park property

A major breakthrough came towards the end of August when information received by investigators pointed them towards a property in Wildevy Crescent, Van Dyk Park.

Police and search-and-rescue personnel were deployed to the property, where a search was conducted.

The search resulted in the discovery of two bodies that had been concealed and partially buried at the property.

The bodies were recovered on August 30 and were later identified by the victims’ next of kin as those of Rabe and Pillay.

At the time of the discovery, investigators were still working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding their deaths, including the cause of death.

The discovery changed the investigation from a missing-person case into a murder investigation.

Two men face serious charges

Two 27-year-old men, Haroon Rashid Adam and Hendrick Swart, have subsequently appeared before the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court.

The accused face charges including premeditated murder, kidnapping, assault and defeating the ends of justice.

The State is opposing bail.

The accused remain legally presumed innocent and have the right to defend themselves against the charges. The allegations against them still have to be tested through the criminal justice process.

The case has already experienced delays during the bail proceedings.

During a September court appearance, Adam’s legal representative informed the court that he was unwell. As a result, the bail proceedings did not proceed as planned and both accused remained in custody.

Bodies discovered after weeks of searching

The discovery of Rabe and Pillay’s bodies followed weeks of uncertainty for their families.

The search involved police, private investigators and members of the community who attempted to establish what had happened to the pair.

The bodies were reportedly concealed beneath the property and wrapped in plastic before being buried.

Forensic investigators and other police personnel were involved in the recovery operation.

The bodies were subsequently taken to a government mortuary as part of the formal identification and post-mortem process.

Investigators have been working to establish how the couple died and what happened between the time they were last seen and the discovery of their bodies.

Questions remain over the couple’s final movements

Although the investigation has resulted in arrests, a number of details surrounding the couple’s final movements remain subject to the police investigation and court process.

Information released during the investigation indicates that Rabe and Pillay had been in different parts of the Boksburg area before their disappearance.

However, the complete timeline of their movements has not been publicly established.

Investigators are expected to rely on evidence gathered from witnesses, forensic examinations, electronic information and other investigative material to establish what happened.

The alleged assault involving Rabe and the disappearance of her cellphone are also among the circumstances that investigators have examined.

The full sequence of events leading to the couple’s deaths will ultimately form part of the evidence presented during the criminal proceedings.

Families continue to seek justice

The deaths have left both families demanding answers as the criminal case moves through the courts.

Rabe, aged 20, and Pillay, aged 25, were young adults whose disappearance prompted concern from relatives and people who knew them.

Pillay’s family has described him as a mechanic, while people close to the victims have continued to remember them as individuals whose lives were cut short.

The families have attended court proceedings and have called for the legal process to continue.

A campaign calling for justice for the pair has also circulated within the community, with supporters encouraged to attend the upcoming court proceedings.

Bail hearing scheduled for October

The next significant development in the case is the bail proceedings involving the two accused.

A notice circulated by the victims’ supporters states that the next bail hearing is scheduled for Monday, October 5, 2026, at 09:00 at the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court.

The State is opposing bail.

The bail hearing will deal specifically with whether the accused should be released from custody while the criminal case continues.

A decision on bail does not determine whether an accused person is guilty or innocent. The allegations will ultimately have to be dealt with through the criminal proceedings.

Investigation remains ongoing

The deaths of Jessica Rabe and Yudistan Pillay have resulted in a serious criminal investigation in Boksburg, with police and prosecutors continuing to work through the evidence surrounding the case.

The publicly established timeline shows that the couple were reported missing in July, an extensive search followed, and their bodies were recovered from a Van Dyk Park property on August 30.

Two men have since been arrested and charged in connection with the deaths.

The case remains before the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court, where the next stage of the bail proceedings is scheduled to take place on October 5.

The accused remain presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The investigation and court proceedings are ongoing.

Body of 11-year-old Letlogang Mokakuoa recovered from Free State river after 10-day search

The body of 11-year-old Letlogang Reitumetse Mokakuoa has been recovered from the Kgoptjane River in Phuthaditjhaba, Free State, following a 10-day search after he was reported missing.

Letlogang was reported missing on 19 September 2026 after he was reportedly swept away in the river.

According to Free State police, Letlogang’s friends were present when the incident occurred and reportedly witnessed him being swept away in the river. Police and rescue personnel subsequently began efforts to locate him and recover his body.

The search continued for several days but was made more difficult by adverse weather conditions in the area.

Police were assisted by the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality Rescue and Divers Team during the operation. A number of resources were used as part of the search, including a police helicopter that was deployed to scan the surrounding area.

Despite the search efforts, the recovery operation did not immediately locate the missing child.

The breakthrough came on Tuesday, 29 September, when community members near the river noticed what appeared to be a human body trapped around a tree in the water.

The community members alerted police after making the discovery.

Police responded to the area and, together with members of the rescue and diving team, retrieved the body from the river.

The deceased was subsequently identified as Letlogang Reitumetse Mokakuoa by his uncle.

Free State police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring confirmed that the identification had been made by the child’s uncle.

The recovery brought an end to the search that had continued since Letlogang was reported missing on 19 September.

Police said the search had involved several attempts to locate and recover the child, with weather conditions affecting the operation.

The use of a police helicopter formed part of the resources deployed during the search, while the municipal rescue and diving team assisted with efforts to locate and retrieve the body from the river.

The discovery by community members ultimately led rescuers to the location where the body was recovered.

Police have opened an inquest docket into the incident.

An inquest is intended to establish the circumstances surrounding a death, and the investigation will determine the relevant facts surrounding the child’s death.

The recovery of Letlogang’s body ends a 10-day period during which his whereabouts were unknown following the reported river incident.

The incident occurred in the Phuthaditjhaba area of the Free State, with police, municipal rescue personnel and community members involved in the search and recovery operation.

No further circumstances surrounding the incident have been released by police at this stage.
