On Sunday evening, July 12, 2026, a woman was shot and killed while seated inside her vehicle on Blackburn Road in the Parkhill area of Durban North. The incident occurred at approximately 17:45, when reports of multiple gunshots prompted an immediate response from private security and emergency services.
Marshall Security Armed Response Officers and members of their Special Operations Team were among the first to arrive at the scene following alerts to their Emergency Dispatch Centre. They found the adult female, believed to be in her forties, deceased inside the vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. A child was present in the same vehicle.
The child sustained minor injuries according to some reports and was physically unharmed in others, but was left severely traumatised after witnessing the shooting. Paramedics attended to the child, who was transported to hospital for further care.
A motorcyclist, described as a delivery biker, was also struck by gunfire while allegedly passing the scene. The rider stopped further down the road and received on-scene stabilization from ALS Paramedics before being transported to hospital for treatment. Netcare 911 was also involved in medical response efforts.
ALS Paramedics confirmed that crews responded to a vehicle with multiple bullet holes. The female victim was declared deceased on the scene. The motorcyclist and child were the other individuals requiring medical attention.
Marshall Security secured the active crime scene, which was handed over to members of the Greenwood Park South African Police Service (SAPS), supported by Metro Police. Roads in the area, including sections of Blackburn and nearby Park Road, were closed for a period while investigations proceeded.
SAPS has launched a full investigation into the circumstances of the shooting. At this stage, the motive remains unknown, and authorities are working to establish whether the woman was specifically targeted or if the incident forms part of a broader event. No arrests have been publicly reported as of the latest available information.
The shooting has heightened concerns about violent crime in the Durban North suburbs, an area that has seen other recent incidents but where residents expect relative safety. Community members expressed shock at the presence of a child during such violence and the impact on innocent bystanders.
Emergency services emphasized the coordinated response involving private security, paramedics, and police, which helped manage the scene and provide immediate aid to the injured. Further updates from SAPS are anticipated as the investigation progresses, including forensic analysis and witness statements from the area.
This incident underscores ongoing challenges with gun violence in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, where rapid response by security providers often plays a critical role before official handover to law enforcement. Families in Parkhill and surrounding Durban North neighbourhoods continue to process the events of July 12 while awaiting more details on the perpetrator or possible motive.
