WATCH – Three Suspects Killed and Five Arrested, Including a Police Officer, Following ATM Bombing in Dinokana, Zeerust

In the early hours of Wednesday, 6 May 2026, an ATM bombing took place in Dinokana, near Zeerust in the North West province of South Africa. Police responded swiftly with an intelligence-driven operation that culminated in a confrontation with suspects in Magogoe Village in the Mmabatho area near Mahikeng. Three suspects were fatally shot during the shootout, while five others were arrested, including one serving police officer.

According to the South African Police Service, a multidisciplinary team tracked the group after the Dinokana incident. The suspects had fled to a safe house in Magogoe Village following the bombing. When members of the SAPS National Intervention Unit confronted them, a shootout broke out. Three suspects died in the exchange of fire.

Police spokespeople confirmed that the group involved in the ATM bombing numbered between 10 and 12 suspects. Some were apprehended during the pursuit from the Zeerust area toward Mahikeng, while others were cornered at the property in Magogoe Village.

Five suspects were taken into custody. Among those arrested is a serving police officer, who is being questioned about his alleged involvement and any possible links to other members of the police service. Authorities have stated that the officer will face the full extent of the law if his involvement is confirmed.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in court on charges including the ATM bombing, possession of explosives, and other related offences. High-calibre weapons and explosives were seized during the operation. Investigations into the broader syndicate continue, with police indicating that further arrests are likely as additional suspects remain at large.

No injuries to police officers were reported during the confrontation. The operation involved coordinated efforts following the initial explosion reported in Dinokana. Forensic and investigative teams remained active at the Magogoe crime scene in the days after the incident.

This event forms part of ongoing challenges with ATM bombings in parts of the North West province, where explosive devices are sometimes used to access cash machines in rural and semi-rural locations. Specific details about the amount of cash taken in the Dinokana bombing or the precise extent of damage to the ATM have not been released in initial updates.

Police continue to appeal for public information that could help locate remaining members of the group. Authorities are examining the full network, including any potential internal connections within law enforcement suggested by the arrest of the police officer. Updates regarding court appearances and further developments in the investigation are expected in the coming days.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Officer Captain Louis Cornelius Nel Killed in Ambush; Provincial Commissioner Vows to Pursue Killers “Dead or Alive”

Captain Louis Cornelius Nel, a 52-year-old officer serving in the South African Police Service Crime Intelligence division in KwaZulu-Natal, was shot and killed in a brazen ambush on Thursday, 30 April 2026, while on duty.

The attack occurred along Flanders Drive in Mount Edgecombe, north of Durban. Captain Nel was driving an unmarked state vehicle when gunmen opened fire on the vehicle. He was struck by gunfire and died at the scene. A colleague travelling with him sustained gunshot wounds, including one to the neck, and was airlifted to hospital for treatment.

Nel had recently been promoted to the rank of captain. He was a resident of The Bluff in Durban and had previously served as a highly trained operator in the SAPS Special Task Force. In his role with Crime Intelligence, he was involved in gathering information critical to combating violent crime in the province.

Family members described Nel as a dedicated and passionate police officer who viewed his career as central to his life’s work. His sister-in-law noted that the promotion represented a full-circle moment after years with the Special Task Force and Crime Intelligence units. He had been married to his wife Ellen for 30 years, having met her as childhood sweethearts. At home, he was remembered as a private, family-oriented man who was dignified, humble, and a man of few words.

Outside of policing, Nel was an active member of the Iron Maiden Midlands motorcycle club, where he served as Sergeant at Arms. Fellow club members described him as a loyal brother who showed courage, loyalty, and a positive demeanor, often noted for having a smile on his face and offering compliments to others.

Nel’s funeral took place on Friday, 8 May 2026, at the Durban Christian Centre Jesus Dome. The service was an official SAPS event attended by senior officials including KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, other police leadership, heavily armed Special Task Force members, family, friends, and colleagues.

Premier Ntuli delivered the eulogy, describing Captain Nel as a courageous and committed law enforcement officer who dedicated his life to protecting the people of KwaZulu-Natal. He stated that Nel would be remembered for his bravery, dedication to duty, and selfless service.

Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi delivered an emotional address. He emphasized the critical importance of Crime Intelligence work and highlighted that Nel was a highly trained officer capable of both gathering intelligence and responding operationally. Mkhwanazi acknowledged the deep pain and anger felt by officers, particularly those in the Special Task Force.

In a direct statement, Mkhwanazi vowed: “We will find them, we will find the killers, dead or alive, we will find them pretty soon.” He described the killing as a significant blow to the SAPS, noting that the loss of a captain in Crime Intelligence affected the foundation of crime-fighting efforts.

Investigations into the ambush are ongoing. Specialized units, including those from Crime Intelligence and organized crime investigators, have been mobilized. Reports indicate that approximately twenty persons of interest have been identified. The case is being handled with involvement from high-level task teams. Police have called for members of the public with information to come forward. Senior leaders have stressed the need for maximum resources to be applied to apprehend those responsible.

Officials have framed the incident as not only an attack on an individual officer but as an assault on the state and the rule of law. Premier Ntuli previously described it as a senseless and barbaric attack and urged communities not to protect criminals.

Captain Louis Cornelius Nel is survived by his wife Ellen, other family members, and colleagues. His death highlights the risks faced by law enforcement personnel in KwaZulu-Natal and has prompted renewed commitments from SAPS leadership to pursue justice and strengthen operational responses.

Quadruple Murder in Jeppestown: Four Shot Dead in Apparent Ambush in Johannesburg

Johannesburg police have launched a quadruple murder investigation after four people were gunned down in Jeppestown on Tuesday night. The victims, two men and two women, were found inside a white Toyota Avanza with multiple gunshot wounds.

Police responded to the corner of Browning and Marshall Streets at approximately 20:50. Officers discovered the white Toyota Avanza parked opposite the gate of Jules High School. Paramedics declared all four occupants dead at the scene.

The victims sustained multiple gunshot wounds to their upper and lower bodies. Investigators cordoned off the area and recovered 32 spent rifle cartridges along with one live 9mm round at the scene, indicating the use of high-powered firearms in the attack.

Preliminary information indicates that the suspects were unknown men traveling in a white Isuzu double cab bakkie with Gauteng registration plates. The vehicle reportedly sped away from the scene shortly after the shooting.

Detectives from Jeppe SAPS are investigating. They are tracing the registered owner of the victims’ Toyota Avanza as part of efforts to identify the deceased and pursue leads. No arrests have been reported.

Witnesses have been reluctant to come forward due to fear in the area. There are no surveillance cameras in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene, which is complicating the investigation.

The motive for the killings remains unknown. Police have described the incident as an apparent ambush and execution-style attack. Investigations are ongoing, with follow-up work focused on identifying those responsible.

This incident has heightened concerns about violent crime in the Jeppestown area of Johannesburg’s inner city. Jeppe SAPS detectives continue to appeal for any information that could assist the probe.
