Johannesburg, South Africa – Investigators have recovered a handwritten note from the scene of the shooting of Major General Feroz Khan, the suspended deputy head of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence division, in Houghton on Sunday night, 28 June 2026.
The note, now part of the evidence in the high-level investigation, allegedly calls for a criminal case to be opened against Colonel Khoromi and General Khumalo. It reportedly requests that the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) probe the matter, specifically referencing issues such as defeating the ends of justice or contempt of court.
Khan was shot in Third Avenue, Houghton, shortly after 11 pm while driving a grey Suzuki Baleno. He sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to Netcare Milpark Hospital, where he remains in critical condition following emergency procedures. Reports indicate he had just left a meeting with his legal team prior to the incident.
Police have described the attack as a targeted assassination attempt. A specialized team comprising the Gauteng Hawks, Gauteng Crime Intelligence, the SAPS Detective Service, and the Political Killings Task Team is leading the probe. Ballistics experts were on scene, and 9mm cartridges were reportedly recovered. Some reports note questions around the absence of visible bullet holes in the vehicle, adding to the details under examination.
The recovery of the note adds a new layer to the investigation. Authorities continue to examine its contents, authorship, and relevance to the shooting. No official confirmation has been provided on whether the note was left by the assailants or otherwise connected to the perpetrators.
Khan had been scheduled to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday, 1 July 2026. The commission, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, is examining alleged criminality, political interference, and corruption in the criminal justice system. Khan’s testimony was anticipated to be significant given prior allegations against him.
In May 2026, the Political Killings Task Team conducted a raid on Khan’s Houghton residence and seized electronic devices. Khan had filed urgent court applications seeking the return of the devices, warning that exposure of sensitive information could endanger lives and operations. He withdrew certain applications, including efforts to limit the commission’s access or testify in camera, leading to the issuance of a summons for his appearance.
Khan joined SAPS in 1991 and advanced through Crime Intelligence roles, including leadership in the Undercover Agent Programme and Operational Intelligence Support. He was promoted to major general. Investigations and commission proceedings have referenced his alleged links to cases involving illicit activities, organized crime, and specific high-profile incidents such as the 2021 Aeroton drug bust.
Police have emphasized that it remains premature to determine any motive for the shooting, including potential connections to the commission or other matters. The investigation is ongoing, with forensic analysis of the scene, the note, and related evidence continuing.
Khan’s condition at Milpark Hospital is being monitored, and further updates on both his health and the probe are expected. This development occurs amid heightened scrutiny of senior officials within the criminal justice system.
