Two suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers have been shot and killed following a shootout with members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Tactical Response Team (TRT) near Westonaria, on the West Rand, on Saturday morning, 7 November 2026.
The suspects were allegedly linked to a cash-in-transit robbery in Virginia, in the Free State, on Friday, 6 November. Two additional suspects managed to escape following the exchange of gunfire.
According to information released by the police, the incident followed intelligence received by the Gauteng SAPS Tactical Response Team from their Free State counterparts regarding the suspects’ movements after the Virginia robbery.
Police were informed that the suspects were travelling in the direction of Soweto.
Gauteng TRT members subsequently provided operational support and began searching for the vehicle believed to be linked to the robbery.
During the operation, officers spotted a vehicle matching the description provided by their Free State counterparts.
When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the occupants allegedly opened fire on the officers, resulting in a shootout.
Two suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange of gunfire, while the remaining two occupants managed to flee the scene.
No police members were injured during the incident.
Firearms Recovered
Following the shootout, police recovered two firearms from the scene.
The recovered weapons include a 9mm pistol and an AK-47 rifle. Both firearms reportedly had their serial numbers removed.
The firearms will form part of the ongoing investigation into the suspects’ alleged involvement in the Virginia cash-in-transit robbery and whether they may be connected to other criminal activities.
IPID Called To The Scene
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was summoned to the scene following the fatal shooting.
The involvement of IPID forms part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two suspects during the police operation.
Police investigations are continuing, while efforts to trace the two suspects who escaped remain ongoing.
