Two men, both believed to be in their thirties, were found dead in a rented room in Mhlasini, KwaZulu-Natal, on the evening of Monday, 31 August 2026, after what is believed to have been electrocution linked to an illegal electricity connection.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for assistance at approximately 19:39. Upon arrival, reaction officers found members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and paramedics from a private ambulance service already at the scene. The two men showed no signs of life and were declared deceased.
A relative reported that she went to check on the men at approximately 17:00 after they had remained unresponsive for an extended period. She entered the room and discovered them lying motionless.
First responders noted that an illegal electricity connection inside the room is believed to have caused the electrocutions. This could not be immediately confirmed at the scene.
The incident occurred in a rented room in the Mhlasini area. No further details regarding the identities of the deceased, the precise nature of the electrical setup, or subsequent official investigations have been publicly confirmed beyond the initial response information. Police and emergency services attended the scene as standard procedure following the discovery of the bodies.
Illegal electricity connections remain a recurring safety concern in parts of South Africa, frequently associated with risks of electrocution, fires, and damage to infrastructure. In this case, responders identified the presence of such a connection as the suspected cause, though formal confirmation was pending at the time of the initial report.
Authorities continue to handle the matter through standard investigative and forensic processes following the declaration of death at the scene.
