Two men, including a 40-year-old member of the South African Police Service (SAPS) from Gauteng, were shot dead during a confrontation at a mine in Ga-Mahlokwane village, near Khubetshane outside Burgersfort in Limpopo’s Sekhukhune District, on Tuesday, 21 July 2026.

According to police, the incident occurred when a group of five men arrived at the mine in a Ford Ranger bakkie. The men claimed to possess a court order directing the mine owner to cease operations and alleged they held shares in the mine.

The confrontation unfolded after an initial visit on Friday, 17 July 2026. On that day, the group approached the mine, encountered two security guards on duty, and instructed them to contact the owner. The security guards made the call, but the owner did not arrive, and the group eventually left the premises.

On Tuesday, the same group returned to the mine and again requested that the security guards contact the owner. They were told to wait on the premises. While waiting, several motor vehicles, including a taxi and a Mercedes Benz, arrived. Occupants from these vehicles confronted the group, leading to a physical altercation.

During the fight, one man was fatally shot at the scene. A second victim sustained gunshot wounds, fled on foot to seek help, and was transported to a medical facility, where he succumbed to his injuries upon arrival. The remaining three men in the group also fled on foot and were not injured.

Preliminary investigations identified one of the deceased as a 40-year-old SAPS member based in Gauteng Province. Police have described the incident as stemming from a turf war related to illegal mining activities and ongoing disputes over the mine’s ownership and operations in the area.

Driekop SAPS registered two cases of murder. A manhunt is underway for the unknown suspects who fled the scene after the shooting. Acting Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers condemned the violence and directed that all available resources be mobilized to apprehend those responsible.

Provincial Police Spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba confirmed that investigations are continuing. Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward, contact the nearest police station, or use the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111. Anonymous tip-offs can also be submitted via the MySAPS app.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions in the Sekhukhune region, where disputes over mining rights and illegal operations have previously led to violent confrontations. No arrests have been reported at this stage, and the full identities of the deceased and suspects remain subject to ongoing police processes.

Six Kidnapping Suspects Arrested in Welkom Following Swift Police Operation

On Friday, 24 July 2026, a 29-year-old man was allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint from his residence in Steyn, Welkom, in the Free State province. His family subsequently received phone calls from the alleged perpetrators demanding an undisclosed ransom for his release.

The incident was promptly reported to the Welkom police and the Free State Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit based in Thabong. In response, a collaborative operation involving the Free State Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, the Welkom K9 Unit, and the Parkweg Tactical Response Team (TRT) was activated. Intelligence gathered during the investigation led the teams to a house in Flamingo Park, Welkom.

Police surrounded the property using tactical approaches. As officers closed in, the suspects attempted to flee but were apprehended. Inside the garage of the house, officers located the 29-year-old victim. He was found with both hands tied behind his back and was in a severe state of shock. The victim had sustained injuries including trauma to the back of the head and bruises on his hands and feet. He was rescued unharmed beyond those injuries and received medical attention.

Six male suspects, aged between 28 and 46, were arrested at the scene. During the operation and subsequent search, police seized two handguns along with ammunition. Three vehicles were also recovered, one of which was identified as reportedly stolen in Winburg.

The arrests and rescue demonstrate effective coordination among specialized SAPS units in addressing violent crime, particularly kidnapping and extortion cases. The victim was reunited with his family following the intervention.

The six suspects are scheduled to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 July 2026. They face charges including kidnapping, extortion, possession of unlicensed firearms, and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle. Investigations are ongoing.

This incident highlights the rapid response capabilities of law enforcement in the Free State when dealing with time-sensitive crimes involving ransom demands. Authorities continue to urge the public to report suspicious activities promptly to aid in preventing and resolving such cases.
