On Saturday, 27 June 2026, a fatal head-on collision occurred on the R61 near Cicira in the Eastern Cape, claiming the lives of two people.
ALS Paramedics Mthatha responded to the scene just after 8am. Paramedics from both EMS and ALS units assessed the wreckage and found two occupants—a male and a female—in the light motor vehicle who had sustained major injuries. Despite their efforts, the pair were declared deceased on the scene.
Reports from responders indicate that the collision involved a truck and a light motor vehicle. The vehicles collided head-on, after which the truck overturned. The driver of the truck sustained no injuries. Traffic in the area was severely disrupted, prompting authorities to advise motorists to avoid the route while emergency services worked at the active scene.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) attended the scene and has launched an investigation to establish the circumstances and cause of the crash. No further details regarding the identities of the deceased have been released at this time.
The R61 is a major provincial route in South Africa, stretching across several provinces and serving as a vital link connecting areas such as Beaufort West in the Western Cape through Graaff-Reinet, Komani (formerly Queenstown), and onward to Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, eventually reaching Port Shepstone in KwaZulu-Natal. In the Eastern Cape section, particularly around Mthatha and nearby areas like Cicira, the road passes through varied terrain that includes rural settlements, rolling hills, and sections that can present challenges such as limited visibility, oncoming traffic on undivided carriageways, and heavy use by a mix of passenger vehicles, trucks, and local traffic.
Cicira, located just outside Mthatha, lies in a region characterised by its proximity to the Mthatha Airport and surrounding communities. The R61 in this vicinity is frequently used for both local commuting and longer-distance travel, contributing to higher traffic volumes that can increase the risk of head-on collisions, especially where overtaking manoeuvres occur or where road conditions may be affected by weather or maintenance activities.
This stretch of the R61 has unfortunately been the site of multiple serious incidents in recent years, including other multi-vehicle crashes and fatal collisions. Such events underscore broader road safety concerns in the Eastern Cape, where factors like long-distance driving, vehicle mix, and enforcement play significant roles. Provincial authorities and organisations such as the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) have previously highlighted the need for improved infrastructure, better driver behaviour, and ongoing awareness campaigns along key routes like the R61.
As investigations proceed, this latest tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety measures. Motorists using the R61 and similar routes are encouraged to remain vigilant, obey speed limits, avoid fatigue on long stretches, and refrain from risky overtaking. Emergency services continue to respond efficiently to incidents in the area, but prevention remains the most effective way to reduce such devastating losses. Updates from SAPS are expected as more information becomes available.
