Three men were shot and killed while two other people were wounded after armed suspects stormed a house in Groendal, Franschhoek, on Sunday morning in what police have described as a targeted shooting incident.

The deadly attack took place in Jakaranda Street at approximately 9:55am, sending shockwaves through the Cape Winelands community as residents awoke to heavy police activity and the sound of gunfire.

According to information released by the South African Police Service, two armed men entered the home and opened fire on the occupants inside the property. Multiple shots were fired during the attack.

Three men, believed to be between the ages of 30 and 35, were declared dead at the scene.

A woman and another man survived the shooting but sustained injuries. Emergency medical personnel treated the wounded victims before transporting them to hospital for further medical care. The extent of their injuries has not yet been officially confirmed.

Police crime scene experts spent several hours combing through the property and surrounding area for ballistic evidence and other forensic material linked to the shooting. Detectives were also seen interviewing witnesses and gathering information from residents in the neighbourhood.

The Franschhoek police initially opened cases of murder and attempted murder following the incident. However, due to the seriousness of the attack, detectives attached to the Western Cape Provincial Serious Violent Crimes unit have since taken over the investigation.

Authorities have confirmed that no arrests had been made by Sunday afternoon, and investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the killings.

Police have launched a manhunt for the two gunmen responsible for the attack, who reportedly fled the scene shortly after the shooting.

The incident has once again highlighted ongoing concerns around violent crime in parts of the Western Cape, where several multiple-victim shootings have been recorded in recent months. However, police have not yet confirmed whether the Franschhoek attack is linked to gang activity, organised crime, or any ongoing disputes.

Residents in Groendal described the aftermath as chaotic, with emergency vehicles, police units, and forensic teams flooding the area shortly after the shooting was reported. Roads around the scene were partially restricted while investigators conducted their work.

Officials have urged anyone with information that may assist the investigation to contact police or provide anonymous tip-offs through Crime Stop.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially released, pending the notification of their families.

Police investigations remain ongoing.
