A minor but noticeable incident briefly interrupted proceedings at South Africa’s Madlanga Commission during a recent hearing involving testimony from former senior police official Julius Mkhwanazi.
The commission, formally chaired by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, was established to investigate allegations of corruption, criminal networks and interference within parts of the criminal justice system. Its mandate includes examining claims relating to law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and other institutions responsible for upholding the rule of law.
During a recent session, Mkhwanazi was delivering testimony when the interruption occurred. While speaking, he used a tissue to wipe his forehead. A portion of the tissue remained stuck to his head, apparently without his knowledge, as he continued addressing the commission.
The situation persisted briefly before it was brought to his attention, prompting a short pause in proceedings. Once aware, Mkhwanazi removed the tissue and continued with his testimony. The hearing then proceeded without further interruption.
Despite the light nature of the moment, the commission itself is focused on serious allegations concerning the functioning and integrity of key state institutions. Testimony presented before the commission forms part of a broader effort to establish facts, assess the extent of alleged wrongdoing, and determine whether reforms or further action may be necessary.
Commissions of inquiry in South Africa are established to gather evidence, hear witness accounts and produce findings based on the information presented. The Madlanga Commission is expected to compile a report at the conclusion of its work, which may include recommendations for institutional reforms or further investigations.
At this stage, the commission continues to hear evidence from witnesses, with proceedings ongoing.
