Three suspected criminals were killed during an early-morning shootout with police in Mariannhill, west of Durban, after members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Tracing Team tracked suspects linked to kidnapping and fraud cases being investigated in Greenwood Park.
According to information released by police and reported by multiple media outlets, the suspects were also believed to have been in possession of illegal firearms at the time of the confrontation.
Police reportedly spotted the suspects travelling in a Hyundai vehicle on Milky Way in Mariannhill during the early hours of the morning. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the occupants allegedly opened fire on the police team and tried to flee the scene.
A gun battle then broke out between the suspects and police. During the chase, the vehicle the suspects were travelling in crashed. The three suspects sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the exchange of fire with officers.
Police recovered two firearms and ammunition at the scene. Authorities indicated that the weapons were seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
No police officers were reported injured during the incident, although police vehicles were reportedly damaged during the exchange of gunfire.
The SAPS KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Tracing Team has been involved in several operations targeting violent criminal groups in Mariannhill and surrounding areas in recent months. Police previously stated that organised criminal groups operating in the area have been linked to crimes including kidnappings, armed robberies, extortion, hijackings, murders, rape cases, and illegal firearm possession.
Mariannhill and nearby communities west of Durban have experienced repeated violent confrontations involving police and suspected criminal gangs over the past year. Several SAPS operations in the area have resulted in suspects being killed during shootouts after allegedly opening fire on officers attempting arrests.
Police investigations into the kidnapping and fraud cases linked to the suspects are continuing. Authorities are also expected to conduct ballistic testing on the seized firearms as part of the investigation.
