Suspended EMPD deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi arrested on fraud and corruption charges

Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi has been arrested in Gauteng on charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice.

The arrest was carried out on Saturday morning at his home by a SAPS task team linked to the Madlanga Commission investigations into corruption within the EMPD.

Man shot dead in parked vehicle in Buffelsdraai, KZN

A man was shot and killed while seated inside a parked Toyota Etios on Hillcrest Drive in Buffelsdraai, KwaZulu-Natal, at approximately 22:09 on Thursday.

Emergency services respond to shooting

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, Reaction Officers found members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) from Verulam already in attendance and securing the area.

Authorities began gathering information and processing the scene shortly after confirming the fatal shooting.


Vehicle targeted while parked on roadside

Information from the scene indicates that the white Toyota Etios had been parked at the entrance of Hillcrest Drive for an extended period prior to the incident.

A nearby resident reported that the vehicle had remained stationary for several hours before the shooting occurred.


Suspects approach and open fire

It is alleged that an unidentified vehicle travelling along Buffelsdraai Road approached the parked Toyota Etios.

Multiple gunshots were fired at the vehicle before the suspects fled the scene immediately afterwards.

No arrests have been confirmed at this stage.


Victim found inside bullet-riddled vehicle

After the shooting, residents approached the vehicle and discovered the driver inside had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim was unresponsive and was declared deceased at the scene.

The vehicle showed visible damage, including bullet holes on the windscreen, passenger window, and rear left side.


Ammunition recovered at the scene

Authorities recovered one live round of ammunition and multiple spent cartridges from the scene.

The recovered items form part of the ongoing investigation into the shooting.
