Three men accused of killing South African motorsport champion Robert Wolk appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where the state said the shooting was not a random roadside confrontation but part of a planned attack on four employees of an unnamed company.
Khotso Richard Mashao, Hlangananani Shezi and Muziwethu Mthethwa face charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition. All three remain in custody.
Wolk, 41, was shot dead at about 16:20 on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, at the intersection of Parklands and Cawood Streets in Esther Park, Kempton Park. He was declared dead at the scene. An Audi linked to him was recovered there. He had been travelling to catch a flight to Cape Town to race at Killarney International Raceway that weekend.
State prosecutor Dinao Makwala told the court that Mashao had been hired to kill four people who worked at the company and that Wolk’s name was on that list. Mashao then allegedly hired Shezi and Mthethwa to help carry out the killings. When the three went to the workplace on 16 September, only Wolk was there. The other three intended targets were not at work.
The state says the accused then followed Wolk after he left the premises and collided with his vehicle in Esther Park. Wolk stopped and got out to check the damage. Occupants of a blue Volkswagen Jetta 5 then allegedly shot him, took his cellphone and fled.
Footage that circulated after the shooting shows Wolk standing beside the road, speaking to the other party and gesturing before he is shot. The gunman then leaves the scene and the Jetta drives away.
The court heard that the Jetta had been hijacked on 15 August 2026. The state said the original owner of that vehicle was shot seven times in the stomach during the hijacking and was certified dead. Police have confirmed the seized Jetta is linked to other serious crimes.
A joint operation involving the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department Northern Region Task Team, SAPS Crime Intelligence and Blue Hawk Tactical led to the arrests within about 24 hours. An informant’s information led to Mashao’s arrest. One suspect was arrested in Spartan. The other two were arrested at Enhlanzeni Hostel, where the Jetta was also recovered. One of the accused later took officers to a property at Allandale Farm in Mayibuye, where police seized a Beretta pistol with a filed-off serial number and 17 rounds of live ammunition. The firearm is believed to have been used in the shooting of Wolk.
The accused are aged between 24 and 33. The matter was postponed because Shezi and Mthethwa needed time to consult lawyers. Mashao, who already has legal representation, asked that any bail application be postponed to 2 October. The case was further postponed to 29 September for a formal bail application and a ruling on a media application to photograph and broadcast the proceedings.
Wolk’s racing career spanned almost three decades. He won South African Junior GP Karting Championships in 1995 and 1997 and received Junior Protea Colours in 1998. He later won multiple Formula Ford titles, the 2013 SA Formula Volkswagen Championship, the 2015 SA Formula 1600 Championship, the 2021 and 2022 SA Global Touring Cars Championships, and the 2024 SA Touring Cars Championship. He received Senior Protea Colours in 2022. In 2026 he won a second Simola Hillclimb King of the Hill title in May and a South African Touring Cars race at Aldo Scribante in June.
Motorsport South Africa described him as a highly respected figure whose passion for racing remained clear until the end. Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie said Wolk competed at the highest level for South Africa across several disciplines and that his death on the road was a tragedy that should concern every South African.
The investigation is continuing. The accused have not yet entered pleas.
One suspect killed and 10 arrested after police shootout in Cleveland, Johannesburg
A shootout between South African Police Service officers and a group of suspects in Cleveland, Johannesburg, on Monday evening, 21 September 2026, left one suspect dead. Ten others were arrested and nine firearms, along with magazines and live ammunition, were recovered.
The incident occurred at approximately 19:36. Police officers on patrol in the area noticed a Hyundai H100 vehicle fitted with blue lights and a siren. The vehicle’s behaviour raised suspicion. When officers approached and attempted to intercept it, the vehicle repeatedly stopped and then drove off.
Officers called for backup and continued to follow the vehicle. When it eventually came to a stop, three suspects got out and opened fire on the police. A shootout followed. Two of the suspects fled the scene on foot. The third was fatally shot by police.
A subsequent search of the vehicle located ten suspects inside. Nine firearms, magazines and live ammunition were recovered from the scene.
The ten arrested suspects are aged between 30 and 54. Cleveland police have opened cases of murder, attempted murder, attempted business robbery, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear in court in the near future. Police investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
According to police statements, the vehicle had been fitted with equipment typically associated with official emergency or police vehicles, including blue lights and a siren. Officers described the driver’s actions prior to the stop as erratic, with repeated stops followed by departures when interception was attempted. Backup was requested during the pursuit. The confrontation escalated only after the vehicle halted and the three suspects exited and initiated gunfire.
No information has been released regarding injuries to police officers. The two suspects who fled on foot have not been accounted for in available reports. The identity of the deceased suspect and further details about the recovered firearms have not been publicly disclosed beyond the total number recovered and the presence of magazines and live rounds.
The charges registered reflect the fatal outcome of the exchange of fire, the alleged attempt to fire on police, the suspected intended criminal activity involving a business robbery, and the unlicensed status of the recovered weapons and ammunition. Police have confirmed that the matter remains under active investigation.
Eastern Cape taxi boss Celani Twazi shot dead in National Intervention Unit operation linked to Libode police killings
Eastern Cape taxi boss Celani Twazi was shot dead during a shootout with members of the South African Police Service National Intervention Unit in Mpindweni. The NIU was executing a search warrant at a premises in the area when an exchange of gunfire occurred. Police recovered a firearm used during the incident at the scene.
Twazi had been linked to the killings of two police officers in Libode earlier this month. The latest operation formed part of ongoing efforts to track down individuals connected to those murders.
On Friday 18 September 2026, in the early hours of the morning, two SAPS members were fatally shot at Ziphunzana Location in Libode, near Mthatha. The deceased were Warrant Officer Thando Magoxo, aged 51, attached to the Mthatha National Intervention Unit, and Constable Ntlahla Tyhali, aged 30, from the Mthatha Public Order Policing Unit.
The officers had responded to a call for assistance after armed suspects attacked a spaza shop and demanded money from the operator. They were later found with gunshot wounds. Both their service pistols were taken. A cordless grinder, allegedly used to cut the shop’s burglar door, was recovered at the scene.
Police opened cases of two counts of murder, two counts of attack on police, two counts of robbery of police firearms, and one count of attempted business robbery. Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata described the killings as an attack on the State and confirmed that a multi-disciplinary team had been deployed with a 72-hour plan activated to trace and arrest the suspects. Preliminary intelligence was being followed up.
Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane directed that maximum resources be deployed. She stated that the killing of officers responding to a call for assistance constituted an attack on those who place themselves in harm’s way and on the authority of the State. She ordered that no resources be spared in the pursuit of the perpetrators and the recovery of the stolen firearms.
In the days that followed, police reported progress under the 72-hour operation. On Friday 19 September, an intelligence-driven operation by Mthatha Crime Intelligence and Mthatha K9 at Ngolo Location in Sibangweni resulted in the arrest of two suspects — a 29-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man — found in possession of an AK-47 rifle and assorted ammunition. They face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Later that night, at approximately 23:55, NIU members acted on information placing one suspect along the N2 at Sibangweni Location, Libode, towards Tsolo. On arrival, the 35-year-old man allegedly opened fire on police. Officers returned fire and the suspect was fatally wounded. A pistol with three rounds of ammunition was recovered.
Further follow-up operations at Ngolo Village, Libode, led to two other male suspects, also linked to the police murders, being fatally wounded. Two handguns were recovered. In total, one AK-47 rifle and three handguns were recovered in connection with the earlier phases of the investigation. Charges under investigation include attacks on police, attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
On 21 September, Lieutenant General Dimpane publicly commended the Eastern Cape police for the swift activation of the operational plan, intelligence gathering, and coordinated multidisciplinary response that produced the arrests and the fatal wounding of three suspects.
The operation in Mpindweni on 22 September, in which Celani Twazi was killed, continued these efforts. According to reports, the NIU was executing a search warrant when the shootout occurred and a firearm was recovered at the scene. Twazi had been identified as linked to the Libode police killings.
