A smash-and-grab incident has been reported in the Borcherds Quarry area of Cape Town, prompting renewed warnings for motorists to remain vigilant while travelling through the area.
The incident was reported on Thursday, 15 October 2026. Motorists have been urged to keep valuables out of sight and take precautions when stopping at traffic lights and intersections.
No independently confirmed details were available regarding the exact circumstances of the latest reported incident, including the time it occurred, the number of suspects involved, the items allegedly stolen or whether anyone was injured.
Motorists Warned About Smash-and-Grab Risks
Smash-and-grab robberies typically involve criminals breaking a vehicle’s window to steal visible belongings before fleeing the scene. Items targeted can include mobile phones, handbags, laptops and other valuables left on seats or within easy reach.
Motorists who stop at intersections or become stationary in traffic can be vulnerable to these opportunistic crimes, particularly when valuables are visible inside their vehicles.
Keeping personal belongings out of sight, locking vehicle doors and remaining aware of people approaching the vehicle can help reduce the risk of becoming a target.
Drivers are also advised to avoid displaying mobile phones or other expensive items while waiting at traffic lights.
Previous Incidents Reported in the Borcherds Quarry Area
Smash-and-grab crime has previously been documented around Borcherds Quarry.
On 19 September 2026, City of Cape Town Metro Police officers responded to a reported smash-and-grab incident at the intersection of Borcherds Quarry Road and Bahrain Drive at approximately 13:40.
According to the City, three suspects fled in different directions when officers arrived, but all three were apprehended. One of the suspects was found in possession of the motorist’s cellphone.
The suspects were identified as minors and handed over to Bishop Lavis police, while the Department of Social Development was notified. The City indicated that they would face charges relating to theft out of a motor vehicle, malicious damage to property and possession of stolen property.
The arrests formed part of wider enforcement efforts targeting smash-and-grab incidents across Cape Town’s road network.
The earlier incident is separate from the latest report, and no information currently confirms that the two cases are connected.
Cape Town Authorities Highlight Road-Crime Concerns
The City of Cape Town has previously identified several roads and intersections where smash-and-grab incidents remain a concern.
In a statement published on 21 September 2026, the City said its CCTV network had detected 246 smash-and-grab incidents during the 2025/26 financial year.
Authorities have also highlighted Jakes Gerwel Drive between the N2 and Bofors Circle, as well as Epping Avenue and Jan van Riebeeck Drive in and around Elsies River, as areas requiring attention.
The City has used a combination of Metro Police deployments, traffic enforcement, CCTV monitoring and drone operations to assist with crime prevention and the apprehension of suspects.
However, officials have acknowledged that the full extent of smash-and-grab crime is difficult to establish because some incidents are never reported.
Safety Advice for Motorists
Motorists travelling through Borcherds Quarry and other busy Cape Town routes are advised to take practical precautions to protect themselves and their belongings.
Drivers should keep handbags, phones, laptops and other valuables out of sight rather than leaving them on passenger seats. Where possible, belongings should be secured in the boot before reaching busy intersections.
Vehicle doors should remain locked and windows closed while stationary in traffic. Motorists should also remain alert to people approaching their vehicles unexpectedly, particularly at traffic lights and intersections.
Anyone who witnesses a crime or notices suspicious activity should report it to the relevant authorities rather than attempting to confront suspected offenders.
The City of Cape Town’s Public Emergency Communication Centre can be contacted on 021 480 7700 from a cellphone to report emergencies or suspicious and criminal activity.
