The child sustained critical injuries in the fall and was rushed to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, where he later died despite efforts by emergency medical personnel to save his life.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:30pm at the residential apartment building on Siripat Road, where emergency responders were called after reports that a child had fallen from a window several storeys above the ground.
According to information released by First Responder KZN, its paramedics attended the scene alongside a team from Life EMS. The medical personnel worked to stabilise the critically injured child before transporting him to hospital for emergency treatment.
Life EMS spokesperson Akshai Rabulal said the child had suffered a severe head injury and was unresponsive when emergency personnel arrived. The child was ventilated before being transported to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The precise circumstances leading up to the fall have not been fully established publicly.
Police Investigate Tyler’s Death
Police have opened an inquest into the six-year-old’s death. An inquest is intended to establish the circumstances surrounding a death where the cause or manner of death requires investigation.
Police have confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated. No publicly confirmed findings establishing exactly how the child fell had been reported at the time of writing.
Reports have differed on whether the apartment window was on the third or fourth floor of the building. However, accounts agree that the child fell from an elevated apartment window and suffered fatal injuries.
Community Mourns the Loss of a Young Life
Tyler’s death has left his family devastated and prompted expressions of sympathy from members of the Reservoir Hills community.
Lee Maharajh, chairperson of the Reservoir Hills Community Policing Forum, said the boy was autistic and reportedly loved climbing. He described the incident as a tragic accident and called for greater awareness of child safety in residential buildings.
Community representatives have also appealed for the family to be supported as they deal with the loss of their child. Residents have been urged to avoid speculation and unsubstantiated allegations while the investigation continues.
The tragedy has renewed attention on the importance of safety measures around apartment windows, particularly in homes where young children live. Securing accessible windows, using suitable window restrictors or guards where appropriate, and keeping furniture away from openings can help reduce the risk of accidental falls.
Tyler’s death is a devastating loss for his loved ones. He was just six years old.
Prime Time News extends its sincere condolences to Tyler’s family, friends and everyone affected by his passing. May they find strength and support during this difficult time.
