Willem van der Westhuizen, 59, has been granted R5,000 bail by the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court after being charged with attempted murder in connection with an alleged attack by his two Rottweilers on a 14-year-old boy in Sir Lowry’s Pass, Western Cape.
The case stems from an incident involving teenager Christiano Jansen, who sustained serious injuries after allegedly being attacked by the dogs near Broadlands Manor in early October 2026.
Van der Westhuizen’s bail follows several court appearances and postponements while the matter was being considered. The case has now been postponed to 10 December 2026 for further investigation.
Teenager Sustained Serious Injuries
The incident occurred when Christiano was reportedly with a group of friends near a dam in the vicinity of Broadlands Manor, a property in Sir Lowry’s Pass.
According to evidence presented during earlier court proceedings, the teenager and six friends were in the area when they encountered Van der Westhuizen and his two Rottweilers.
Investigating officer Sergeant David Stimelo told the court that one of the boys allegedly heard the accused instructing the dogs to chase the group. The boys reportedly ran when the animals approached them, but Christiano fell and was attacked.
The allegations form part of the State’s case against Van der Westhuizen. His defence disputed the prosecution’s account of how the incident unfolded.
Christiano sustained serious bite wounds affecting his head, face and legs. Reports also indicated injuries to his arm.
Emergency personnel from the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services responded to the incident. The teenager was initially taken to Helderberg Hospital before being transferred to Tygerberg Hospital for further treatment because of the severity of his injuries.
He reportedly suffered bleeding on the brain and facial fractures and underwent surgery on 9 October.
Accused Disputed Allegations
Van der Westhuizen previously denied deliberately setting his dogs on the children.
In an account given before his arrest, he said he had been walking his two young Rottweilers without leads when he noticed the boys near a dam on the property.
He claimed the dogs chased the children after they started running and that he intervened when one of the animals pinned the teenager down.
He also maintained that he left the immediate scene to secure the dogs and remove them from the area, rather than because he did not care about the injured boy.
The defence later disputed the State’s version during the bail proceedings, maintaining that Van der Westhuizen had been walking with the dogs when they ran ahead of him.
The court proceedings have therefore involved competing accounts of the circumstances leading to the attack. The allegations against the accused have not been established as fact through a criminal conviction.
Separate Alleged Dog Attack
The attempted murder charge is not the only matter being investigated against Van der Westhuizen.
He also faces a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following a separate alleged incident involving the same dogs on 4 October 2026.
In that case, a 36-year-old man reportedly opened a case against the accused after an alleged attack. The man was subsequently seen attending an earlier bail hearing using crutches.
The two incidents, which reportedly occurred within days of each other, have raised concerns among residents about the dogs and the circumstances surrounding the alleged attacks.
The separate charge remains an allegation and must be dealt with through the appropriate legal process.
Community Members Called for Justice
The case attracted attention from residents of Sir Lowry’s Pass, with community members and relatives of the injured teenager gathering outside the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court during the earlier bail proceedings.
Those present called for accountability and opposed the accused’s release while the bail application was being considered.
Community activist Allen Arendse spoke publicly on behalf of residents and the family, highlighting concerns about the two alleged incidents and seeking clarity about the dogs’ whereabouts.
Earlier reporting indicated that the dogs had been removed from the property and taken to a kennel following an inspection. Their status and any subsequent developments would need to be confirmed by the relevant authorities.
The family also expressed hope that Christiano would recover from his injuries. Updates reported during the earlier proceedings indicated that he was receiving treatment at Tygerberg Hospital following surgery.
Case Postponed to December
Van der Westhuizen has now been granted bail of R5,000, according to the latest court update.
His release on bail does not amount to an acquittal and does not determine whether he is guilty of the charges. The criminal proceedings remain ongoing.
The matter has been postponed to 10 December 2026 for further investigation.
The outcome of the case will depend on the evidence presented through the legal process. Further details concerning the investigation, the status of the dogs and any additional court developments have not been independently confirmed in the available reporting.
