Canelands, KwaZulu-Natal – A heavy motor vehicle collided with lighter vehicles on Friday afternoon, resulting in serious injuries and a complex rescue operation.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) responded to multiple emergency calls received between 17:26 and 17:29. Officers and paramedics arrived on scene at 17:29.

A super-link mechanical horse and trailer, loaded with two trailers of cornflakes, collided with two Toyota Hilux bakkies and a minibus taxi while turning. The truck then veered off the road down a steep embankment, crushing one of the Hilux bakkies partially underneath it.

Reaction Officers worked for approximately 30 minutes to extricate two trapped occupants from the crushed Toyota Hilux. Paramedics then stabilised them on scene. Five people in total sustained serious injuries and received medical attention from responding services.

The Ethekwini Fire Department, Metro Police, and several ambulance services assisted at the scene. RUSA officers remained on standby to secure the area against potential looting of the truck’s load.

The scene remained active into the evening as emergency operations continued. No further details on the cause of the collision or the identities and conditions of the injured have been released at this time.
