A public safety warning has been issued for motorists travelling on the N1 highway north of Pretoria following the circulation of dashcam footage showing a reported robbery of a driver who stopped along the road after the Carousel Toll Plaza.
The night-vision footage, recorded by a Cartrack vehicle tracking system at approximately 10:25 p.m. on 2 October 2026, was shared publicly on 4 October 2026. Location data visible in the recording places the incident along the N1 corridor north of Pretoria, in the direction of Maubane, beyond the Carousel Toll Plaza.
In the footage, a vehicle is shown stopped along the highway. Activity consistent with a robbery is visible inside the vehicle. The driver had stopped on an isolated section of the road.
The Carousel Toll Plaza is a mainline toll point on the N1 north of Pretoria, operated as part of the Bakwena Platinum Corridor. It lies roughly 80 km north of Pretoria near the area associated with Bela-Bela/Warmbaths and serves traffic heading toward Polokwane and further north. The stretch between the Carousel Plaza and the Maubane off-ramp has been identified in multiple previous reports as a location of roadside attacks.
No official police confirmation specifically detailing the 2 October 2026 incident shown in the footage had been publicly identified as of 4 October 2026. The material has been treated as a reported incident and public alert rather than a fully verified case with confirmed suspect details, injuries, or arrests.
This warning follows a pattern of similar incidents in the same corridor. In January 2025, police investigated a case of murder and armed robbery after a minibus stopped north of the Carousel Toll Plaza. According to police statements at the time, the driver had voluntarily pulled over to relieve himself when four unknown men emerged from nearby bushes, attacked the occupants, robbed them of money, and fired shots. Two passengers were killed at the scene and a third was injured. No suspects were immediately arrested. Police advised the public to remain vigilant and to use filling stations rather than isolated roadside stops for rest or relief.
In November 2025, reports indicated a motorist was shot and killed after criminals spiked a vehicle on the N1 between Carousel Plaza and the Maubane off-ramp. Earlier incidents in the vicinity have also involved motorists stopping for flat tyres or other reasons and being ambushed by suspects emerging from the bush, resulting in shootings, robberies of cellphones and cash, and in some cases fatalities.
Common factors across these cases include vehicles stopping or being forced to slow on relatively isolated sections of the N1 north of Pretoria, particularly at night, and suspects operating from vegetation or the roadside. Spiking (placing objects on the road to force vehicles to stop) has been reported in some incidents in the broader Gauteng highway network, though police have confirmed it was not a factor in the January 2025 Carousel case.
Safety guidance repeated in connection with these incidents advises motorists not to stop on isolated sections of the highway, especially after dark. Drivers needing to rest, address a vehicle issue, or use facilities are directed to proceed to a petrol station, designated rest area, or other well-lit and secure location. Additional practical measures include keeping doors locked, windows closed, mobile phones charged and accessible for emergency calls, and remaining alert to suspicious activity.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour or becomes the victim of a roadside crime is advised to contact the South African Police Service or emergency services immediately. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the MySAPS App.
The N1 remains a major national route carrying significant volumes of private, commercial, and long-distance traffic between Gauteng and Limpopo. The repeated nature of reported attacks in the Carousel–Maubane stretch has prompted ongoing public alerts focused on practical precautions rather than broader commentary.
As of the latest available information, the specific 2 October 2026 incident remains based on the circulated tracking system footage and the accompanying public warning. Motorists travelling this section of the N1 are urged to plan stops carefully and avoid unnecessary roadside halts in isolated areas.
