Pinetown, a suburb in the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, has faced ongoing challenges linked to drug activity. Police operations and community actions have highlighted the presence of illicit substances, manufacturing, and associated crime in the area.

On 20 May 2026, members of the March and March movement, led by Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, conducted a march of approximately 5.5 kilometres in Pinetown towards the central business district near the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Edgewood campus. The protest focused on issues including illegal immigration, jobs, and housing. During the operation targeting abandoned and allegedly hijacked properties, participants reported discovering multiple illegal substances at a building, including what appeared to be ‘Zosozo’ pills at locations such as Parklane flats, an area noted for prior drug activity. Protesters pursued fleeing suspects and displayed items, with police present monitoring the situation.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda stated that claims of drugs found by protesters were not accurate, describing circulated images as showing empty pill containers rather than active substances. Police indicated they found individuals linked to criminal activities at the property but did not confirm seizures of drugs or undocumented immigrants specifically tied to the protest action. No official arrests or drug seizures from the March and March inspection were publicly confirmed at that time.

Pinetown has a documented history of drug-related police operations. In December 2025, the Pinetown Tactical Response Team (TRT), working with eThekwini District Crime Intelligence, executed a search warrant in Phoenix (within the broader operational area) at a premises guarded by armed security. Officers arrested two men, aged 30 and 34, recovering 1,563 mandrax tablets and 4,070 heroin capsules, along with a money counting machine. The seized drugs had an estimated street value exceeding R200,250. The suspects faced charges and were scheduled to appear in Phoenix Magistrates Court.

In March 2021, the Hawks conducted an intelligence-driven raid in Pinetown on a property linked to drug manufacturing. They recovered equipment, chemicals, and powder suspected to be methcathinone (commonly known as ‘cat’), with a total value of nearly R1.5 million.

Earlier operations in the Durban/Pinetown area, including around 2020, uncovered facilities processing heroin into pharmaceutical-style capsules, contributing to shifts in the local drug market. Heroin capsules in various colours became prominent in distribution networks.

Broader context includes research and reports noting Pinetown as an area affected by drug abuse, particularly among youth, alongside high unemployment and related crime. Studies have pointed to substances such as whoonga (a form of heroin), cannabis, and other drugs impacting communities. A 2019 academic paper described Pinetown as facing significant challenges from drug proliferation contributing to criminal activity.

South African Police Service (SAPS) continues operations against drug trafficking in KwaZulu-Natal, with Pinetown forming part of regional efforts. The province has seen multiple busts involving heroin, mandrax, and other narcotics. National bodies like the Central Drug Authority have highlighted substance abuse issues in KZN districts, including Pinetown, through school and community programmes.

Pinetown Magistrates Court has handled various drug-related cases over the years, including appearances tied to larger seizures in the greater Durban area. Local infrastructure developments, such as plans for a permanent SAPS forensic laboratory in Pinetown, aim to support crime-fighting capabilities in the region.

These incidents reflect persistent law enforcement actions and community-reported concerns regarding drug dealing, processing, and associated social issues in Pinetown. Police maintain responsibility for investigations, arrests, and addressing illegal activities in the area.
